A
FUND has been set up by Exmouth CC and Devon CCC to
pay for a permanent memorial to club stalwart John Tozer,
who died earlier this year.
Tozer's entire cricket career
was with the Exmouth Cricket Club starting as a teenager
in the early 1960's.
He is remembered by those who played with him as a player
with outstanding ability whose tactical acumen and general
awareness of the game were exceptional.
Although not holding a post with the Exmouth club in
recent years, Tozer was always willing to advise on
matters cricket and financial,
John was Devon treasurer for 17 years where once again
his expertise was acknowledged by the committee and
those with whom he came into contact.
He was a kind, quiet but determined person who was dedicated
to his family. So with the support of Lynda, and children
Jeremy and Rachel, the memorial fund has been set up.
The proceeds will be put towards the installation of
a new electronic scoreboard on the Exmouth ground.
In view of the large number of runs John scored for
Exmouth, this will be a fitting tribute and will serve
as a permanent memory of his contribution both to Exmouth
and Devon cricket.
It will be particularly appropriate as Rachel is the
scorer for both Exmouth and Devon.
Tozer was well known in Exmouth having gone to school
there and been involved in other sports locally, including
rugby, badminton and tennis.
He spent the majority of his professional life working
in the financial world in Exmouth. It is hoped the many
people who knew John and remember him with affection,
either through sporting or professional connections,
might make a donation to the fund.
It is anticipated that donations will be acknowledged
on a plaque on the new scoreboard.
Peter Langford, the Exmouth chairman, is co-ordinating
the appeal. Donations can be sent to him at Exmouth
Cricket Club, the Maer, Exmouth, EX8 2AY. Cheques should
be made payable to the 'John Tozer Memorial Fund'.
