Wales
v Devon - Sunday, May 13
DEVON
had a wasted trip to Swansea as their Minor Counties KO
Cup game against Wales was called off without a ball being
bowled.
Overnight
rain left the ground at Mumbles absolutely saturated and
it only needed the most cursory of inspections from umpires
John James and Martin Brown to confirm what everyone has
already worked out for themselves.
Devon were top of the South West pool going into the match
and that's not changed as Cornwall and Berkshire were
also rained off at Newbury.
Devon skipper Bob Dawson said he was disappointed not
to have played Wales as beating them would have dented
their chances of winning the pool and progressing into
the quarter-finals.
Dawson added: “Although it
is shame we haven't played this game it doesn't alter
things a huge amount.
“I have said all along the only way to be sure of topping
the group is to win all your matches and we still have
to beat Cornwall in three weeks time, which was always
the case in my mind.
“Even if we had beaten Wales there was no guarantee of
topping the group as Cornwall could lose to Wales and
beat us and we are all level then.
“If you have to have a game rained off it is better that
it was against a side that hadn't lost. At least this
way we haven't surrendered any ground. You never know,
it might rain at Falmouth this Sunday when Wales are playing
there.
“We have to beat Cornwall and hope our run rate is better
than theirs or Wales' if we all finish level. At
the moment it is because of the big score we made batting
first against Dorset.”
Devon play Cornwall at North Devon on June 3. Cornwall
entertain Wales at Falmouth this coming Sunday. Wales
compete their programme on June 3 when Dorset visit St
Helen's, Swansea.
