PAIGNTON got back on course in the Meek Mortgages Torbay Twenty20 Cup with a competent 21-run win over Barton.

   The two-time tournament champions needed a win after losing to Torquay last week – the first time they had been beaten in the competition since it started in 2005.

   South African Riaan Jeggels led the way for Paignton with an unbeaten 64, which included three sixes and five fours. Jeggels put on 38 with Gavin Ewing (24) in the stand of the innings.

   Barton were soon pegged back by a miserly spell from Mike Pedley, whose four overs only cost one run and earned him a wicket. Off-spinner Ewing (1-16 off 4) likewise gave the Barton batsmen little to hit.

   The writing was on the wall for Barton by halfway as they were 38 for one and lagging behind the asking rate. Even with seven wickets in hand, they were not going to win it from 64 for three with five overs left.

   Stephen George (3-26) got among the wickets as Barton reached 102 for six at the close, Imran Abbas top scoring on 39.

   Paignton 123-6 (G Ewing 24, R Jeggels 64no, M Gilmour 11), Barton 102-6 (I Abbas 39, H Morgan 13; S George 3-26). Paignton bt Barton by 21 runs.
