was third time lucky for Axminster as they claimed the
Corinthian Cup in fine style with a 33-run win over
Kingsbridge.
Two previous attempts to play the final had
been foiled by the weather, so it was fingers crossed
that the replay at Bovey Tracey would go ahead. Thankfully
it did.
Skipper Gary Larcombe led from the front with 71 as
Axminster posted 172 for six in their allocation of
18 eight-ball overs.
Larcombe and Joel Seward, whose knock of 56 helped win
him the Man of the Match award, put on 107 for the third
wicket after Axminster had been wobbling at 21 for two.
Aussie Dave Salter (3-29) removed Seward and was the
pick of the Kingsbridge bowlers. Josh Dorey (2-57) was
next best.
An asking rate of more than nine an over was always
a stiff one for Kingsbridge, but they had Axminster
worried for a while as openers Steve Gledhill (41) and
Steve Tall (15) made a 65-run hole in the deficit.
Wickets started to tumble once the partnership was broken
with Ashley Treeby (17) the only batter to hang around
long.
Losing six wickers for 35 runs shot the rigging away
as far as Kingsbridge were concerned as they dipped
to 139 all out with four balls to go.
Andrew Guppy (2-36) and Nick Taylor (2-13) helped put
Kingsbridge on the slide, but it was Seward (2-19) who
finished them off to claim the Man of the Match trophy.
