NORTH DEVON LEAGUE WEEK 7 – MAY 18

DIVISION ONE

THERE are new leaders of the First Division after early leaders Bradninch slipped to their first defeat of the season in a thrilling game that saw hosts Lynton & Lynmouth claim a single wicket win off the penultimate ball of the contest.

Bradninch batted first and were indebted to an unbeaten 63 from Lucas Fencl in their offering of 234-6. Support came from teenager Eliot Acton (36), his cousin Ross Acton (22), Matthew Jarrett (28no) and Zimbabwean Ryan Butterworth (27).

Former Torquay all-rounder Ed Yeo (92), Ian Hobbs (31) and Steve Hunt (26) helped keep their side in the run chase but they came to the final over of the game with their final pair at the wicket and still needing nine runs to win the match.

Nick Bowen was on strike and had Matt Ryan at the non-striker's end whilst for the visitors the final over was to be delivered by their Australian all rounder Adrian Ezquerro.

The first three deliveries were all ‘dot' balls and the fourth was deemed a wide by the Umpire but the fifth and sixth were thumped to the boundary by Bowen and the home side claimed a nail-biting victory and with it top spot, an honour they share with Filleigh.

Filleigh claimed a third successive win with a comprehensive victory over reigning champions Newton Tracey who have not started the campaign in any sort of form as they slumped to a third straight defeat.

At 109-7 Filleigh were in all sorts of trouble but Jamie Palmer (49no) and Nick Dartnoll (20) put on 45 for the eighth wicket and then Palmer and Gary Henry (34) added a crucial 34 runs for the ninth wicket to take their side to a close of 206-9.

Only Bill Sobey (29) made any impression with the bat in the reply as the Filleigh bowlers stayed on top throughout, eventually bowling out the hosts for 127, Frazer James and Nick Dartnoll both claiming three wickets each whilst batting ‘hero' Palmer sent down eight excellent overs and took 2-14.

North Devon are in the chasing pack after they despatched Bideford with a six-wicket win. Clifford Hayes (3-28) and Matt Dart with 2-10 in nine overs restricted the visiting side to 134-8, only Alex Hodges (29) making any impression and then after tea Dan Pickard (20) got the run chase off to a solid start whilst Scott Amos (59no) and Stuart Rhodes (21no) saw their side to a comfortable win.

Sandford bounced back from the previous weekend's defeat to Filleigh by turnimg over Beaford with something to spare at Creedy Park. What's more the home faithful were treated to the first runs and wickets from the club's former Zimbabwean Test star Douglas Hondo who hit an unbeaten 45 and then bagged a brace of wickets, Richard Foan did similar, he scored 43 with the bat and took 2-30 but the home hero was Richard Tucker who carried his bat for an imperious 128 in the home side's total of 277-4. The Beaford reply closed on 167-9 with only John Voght managing to make an impression with 44, Mike Walker the main wicket taker with three victims whilst Ryan Glass matched the wicket taking of Hondo and Foan.

DIVISION TWO

EARLY leaders Heathcoat suffered a first defeat of the season beaten by four wickets up at Barnstaple & Pilton where the home side scored 157-4 in reply to the Heathcoat offering of 156 all out.

Only Pete Moysen (28) and skipper Martyn Williams (20no) made any impression with the bat and had it not been for an amazing 61 extras, 30 of which were wides and 15 no balls, then the visitor's total would have been far fewer, the home side's.

Rodney Bowden and Henry McEndoo both bagged braces of wickets and then Michael Paine, another Exmouth player, led the successful run chase with a half-century before he was forced off with what appeared to be a muscle strain.

It was left to Ross Burbidge (21no) and young McEndoo (17no) to see their side home. John Harvey did his best for the visitors taking all four of the home wickets to fall but Barum got home at a canter.

Bratton Fleming claimed a second win of the season with a sound beating of visiting Filleigh II. Ted Cumming (90) and Steve Brazier (56) together with Paddy Dartnoll (45) led their side to an imposing 281-5, Rob Collier taking three of the wickets to fall and then Andy Collier top scored as wickets fell around him and the reply floundered on 86, four wickets to Charles Langdon and three to Matthew Hunt.

Victoria Park thumped Westleigh by 97 runs after Ian Brown (40), Mark Bettis (37), Will Anderson (28) and Paul Tuson (28) all chipped in to see their side to 225-9 and then Mick Cashmore, a five-wicket man the previous week, bagged another three and Tuson also picked up three to add to his earlier runs as he visitors were bowled out for 128.

DIVISION THREE

THERE was a mid-Devon derby in the Third Division at Cheriton Fitzpaine where Sandford II slipped to defeat beaten by 106 runs. John Pitt (65) and Phil Cutlet (69) added 117 for the third wicket and later runs came from Jeremy Tricks with an unbeaten 40 as the hosts made their way to a close of 274-6.

Julian Tompkins and Matt Blakeney both claimed a couple of wickets for Sandford who did not help their own cause by ‘giving' the home side no fewer than 63 extras, 41 of which were wides!

Sean Hawkins (46), Pete Whitby (30) and Blakeney (28) did their bit with the bat but wickets fell at regular intervals with Nick Guscott taking 4-10 in 3.1 overs and Robbie Keight returning figures of 3-28.

Incorrigibles were winners for the third time in four early season outings and they did not have to bowl a ball in anger to bank another maximum as scheduled opponents Holsworthy cried off owing to four of their number being off at Wembley following Exeter City and three others engaged in silage work after the previous day's rains!

Shobrooke Park are one of just six teams across the Five Divisions of the league to still boast a 100 per cent record after they put North Devon II to the sword, dispatching them back to Instow with a 174-run defeat. Steve Poortman (89) and Richard Pyle (88no) were the main contributors to a total of 253-7, the pair added 129 for the fifth wicket and then John Sweeney (4-21), Ben Trenaman (3-9) and Will May (2-37) skittled out the visitors for just 79 with John Wainright hitting almost half his sides runs !

DIVISION FOUR

BUDE made all sorts of records the previous week and they were once again putting bat to ball at home on Sunday as visitors Newton Tracey found themselves chasing leather for much of the pre-tea session.

Ashley Hockin hit 163 and Warren Rumble an unbeaten 60 as Bude amassed 355-8 and then Sam Hockin, brother of the centurion, bagged a four-wicket haul to see the visitors close on 190-8.

Kelseymen were big winners at home to Victoria Park II who may have thought that their 178 was a decent enough total. Tim Lane top scored with 67, but only Mike Harris (35) could offer any meaningful support and the Paul Jagger (84) and Steve Cresswell (66) combined to rush the home side to a nine-wicket win and for the second week running the only Victoria Park bowler to claim a wicket was Andy Farrant.

Shebbear went one better than Kelseymen as they thumped Bishps Nympton by ten wickets. Mike Gregory (37) and Dan Rance (30) were the only visiting batsmen to really trouble the scorers in a total of 174-7 and then Martin Bray (101no) and fellow opener Richard Hoskins (58no) enjoyed themselves to such an extent that when the victory was confirmed the home side still had nearly half their 45 overs to face! Nympton skipper Kelvyn Warren lamented: “The best thing I did all day was to correctly call heads at the start!”

Lynton & Lynmouth II won a thrilling game at Bideford, this a game that the hosts Kevin Fishleigh described as: “ A wonderful game to take part in”.

George Edlin top scored for the visitors with 74 in a total of 155, Nick Constable taking three wickets for Bideford who started well enough, Alex Wood (34) and Fergus Bradbeer (26) seeing them to 64-1 but wickets began to tumble and it was left last pair Josh Ware and Tom Farnell, the latter a tender 14 who bagged a brace of wickets before tea, was not out 9 when partner Ware lost his wicket with just 13 runs separating the sides.

DIVISION FIVE

WITHERIDGE-based Nomansland were denied any action in the one Saturday match scheduled when the rains ruined their game at North Molton.

There was great frustration for Halberton who were loking forward to continuing their 100 per cent start to the campaign at the expense of Black Torrington but the North Devon side cried off on the morning of the game citing an inability to raise a team.

Halberton skipper Dan Coles said: “ It seems wrong that a side can simply ‘cry off' and not face any points penalty, it was a lovely afternoon and, after the rain of the day before it was ideal cricket weather so not to be able to play was very frustrating.”
