ALL
five games scheduled for the Sunday of week three were
played to a finish and they produced the first ‘five-fer'
of the season, a last-over win and an individual score
just 10 runs short of a double century!
The First Division finally
got under way with Sandford, washed out the day before
getting the better of hosts North Devon in a game that
was dominated by the bowlers leaving the Mid Devon side
returning to Creedy Park with a 69 run win. Adrian Small
(50) and Richard Foan (30) led their side to 167, Matt
Westaway claiming 4-21 and Scott Amoss returning the
exceptional figures of 3-9 in 5.1 overs of medium pace.
North Devon were bowled out for 98 with only Warren
Miller (26) and Amoss (15no) making any impression.
Ex-Zimbabwe Test star Douglas Hondo bagged a brace on
his first outing in the League but he was upstaged by
young Simon Ashplant who took 3-23.
In Division Two Braunton bounced back from the previous
days defeat to see off Barnstaple & Pilton in a
thrilling game that the home side eventually won by
22 runs.
Tom Mitchum hit an unbeaten 89, Andy Paddison chipped
in with 41 whilst Mark Mitchell, who was only at the
crease for the final ten overs of the innings clubbed
49 as the hosts closed on 222-3.
Brady Saunders (49) led the reply but Barum were bowled
out shortly after securing their 10th point on 200,
three wickets each for Gary Osbourne and Paddison.
Heathcoat were three-wicket winners at Filleigh II in
a game that was not decided until the final over of
the day.
Playing is first game for the Club, Ravi Gill top scored
for Filleigh with 37, Martyn Williams was the pick of
the Heathcoat bowlers with a couple of wickets and his
side closed on 150-7, led by Pete Guest (28) and Luke
Peterson (24). Simon and Mike Prideaux each took two
wickets for Filleigh.
Two games were played in Division Four and both produced
‘eye-catching' scores. North Devon III were shot out
for 66 at Bideford II. Only John Wainwright (16) and
Jamie Overton (12) made any impact with the bat, the
ball dominated, especially Darren Willcocks who took
a wicket with his first ball and went on to claim the
season first-five wicket haul (5-23).
The early damage was done by Matt Bettis, who removed
both North Devon openers. Andy Widdicombe led the run
chase with an unbeaten 34 to wrap up a nine-wicket win.
Bishops Nympton suffered a hammering at Bude where the
home side amassed a total of 394-3 and then shot the
visitors out for just 63 to record a whopping 331-run
winning margin!
Ashley Hockin opened the home innings and was finally
out for 190.
Hockin and Matt Williams (81) added 200 for the second
wicket and then Andy De Rosa (52not out) and Hockin
plundered a further 108 for the third wicket.
Only John Verney managed double figures in the reply,
he was out for 17. Sam Hockin took 3-1 in five overs,
four of which were maidens, Aussie Jay Ambrey bagged
a brace as did Sean Parrish and there was cameo show
of off-spin from 14-year-old Derek Piper who took 2-8.
