DEVON'S batting failed to fire again as they lost a 50-over game against Newlands CC - but there was a much better performance and victory later in the day.

The tourists were bowled out for just 81 in the 22nd over with only James Hayter (31no) among the runs.

Newlands cruised to victory for the loss of five wickets after just 16 overs.

Devon looked a totally different team in the Twenty20 game that followed.

Newlands racked up 159-2 in their innings, but the Devon boys never gave up.

Openers Ciaran Gray (35) and Hayter (28) gave them just the start they needed.

Then Sam Russell bashed an impressive 51, which included four sixes as the scores finished tied after 20 overs apiece.

It was left to a super over to decide the winners with Devon coming out on top by five runs to record a nail-biting win.
