A DIVISION 2nd XI

SHOBROOKE park were on the receiving end of a two-ton barrage at Paignton, yet managed to hold out for a respectable losing draw.

Ian Selway launched into the Shobrooke bowling to score 108, which included 14 fours and two sixes.

Baldry blazed away for 138 not out, with 17 fours and two sixes, during a stand of 207 for the third wicket with Selway.#

By the time Will Matthewman had chipped in with 21, Paignton declared with 287 for five on the board. James Sweeny (3-66) was the only Shobrooke bowler to pick up reasonable compensation for being smacked around the park.

Shobrooke reached 208 for eight in reply having given up the chase sometime earlier.

Pete Turner (27) got early runs and 47 extras helped Shobrooke's cause.

The turning point came when Matthewman bowled Mark Goodman to leave Shobrooke 164 for eight with 15 overs to go.

Veteran Fran Pyle (23no) and Sweeney (31no) blocked out for the draw.

BOVEY Tracey won by two wickets at home to Abbotskerswell, who roped in 78-year-old John Pugh just to make up the numbers.

Gary Day, wielding a bat he made himself, cracked a top score of 87 not out for Abbots. His stand of 88 for the third wicket with Sean Green (38) was the best of the game.

Day, who had never made a league 50 before, and skipper Andy Rose (22no) put on another 68 unbroken in the last 11 overs towards a final tally of 190 for three.

Jerry Parr (37) and Sam Thomas (32) pointed Bovey in the right direction by making 64 for the first wicket.

Green then performed the hat-trick – two bowled and Pete Shepherd caught to complete it   - and at 64 for three it was a different game for a while.

Parr dug in then father-and-son pair and Simon (25) and Dan Newton (35) batted more aggressively to move the score on.

Green (4-54) and Haydn Crocker (2-34) kept the pressure on, but an unbeaten 20 from Nigel Mountford got Bovey home and dry with three overs to spare.

BARTON were brought down to earth after their opening day victory over Paignton when they suffered a 166-run defeat at Hatherleigh.

Opener Graham Bryant carried his bat for an unbeaten 89 as Hatherleigh rattled along got 273 for four against a depleted Barton side.

Bryant and captain Ross Cherrington (59) posted 132 for the third wicket, then Nick Rogers (41no) joined Bryant to knock up another 60.

Barton captain Adam Castle (2-88) was the main wicket taker for his side.

Barton collapsed in a heap to 107 all out, a disappointing outcome after they had been 69 for three.

Losing three wickets for no runs didn't help Barton's cause – Cherrington (4-21) taking two in one over – and they finished up all out for 107. Steve Lewis top scored with 28.

Ian Jones (3-13) and Brian Stacey (2-10) were Cherrington's bowling back-ups.

BRADNINCH batted Sidmouth 3rd XI out of the game to set themselves up for a 129-run win.

Gary Newall led the way with 70 and shared in a stand of 136 with Andy Nicholls (50), to point Bradninch towards a total of 275 for three.

The early momentum was maintained by Derrick Foan (44) and Chris Dean (51no). The less said about Sidmouth's bowling figures the best for all concerned! Charlie Miles (2-52) had the best of them.

Sidmouth were 16 for three early in their reply, then 84 for seven, but picked up the pace with Greg Chaplin (20) and Bob Macey (61) putting on 50.

George Lister made 20, but the damage was done as Sidmouth subsided to 146 all out in the 42nd of their 50 overs.

AXMINSTER were taken to the cleaners at Cornwood, where they were bowled out for 87 by Chris Anderson (3-20), Steve Smith (4-47) and Fran Adams (2-1).

Steve Wakeley (18) and Alex Beighton (16) were the only double-figure run getters in the 30 overs Axminster batted.

Having been 43 for two when he got out, skipper Andrew Guppy was unimpressed by the collapse that followed.

Danny Harris top scored with 38 not out in the 22.3 overs Cornwood had to bat to clinch their win.
