C
DIVISION 2 nd XI – JUNE 9, 2007
KENTISBEARE
are off the bottom of the C Division having overhauled
Kingsbridge in the basement with the proceeds of a draw
at third-placed Bideford.
Bideford made 199 for six with Martin Barrett top scoring
with 36. Kentisbeare made a real fist of the run chase
but, with their last pair at the wicket, they closed
11 runs short of victory. Harry Howe (39) and Dave Squires
(36) were Kent's man run scorers.
Kingsbridge's total of 177 for seven against leaders
Plymouth never looked enough – as Peter Firth
(71) and John Lawrence (63) proved in a four-wicket
win for the table toppers. Steve Inch hit a half-century
for the losers
George Barnicott, Morgan Parkinson and John Mitchell
had three wickets each for second-placed Plymstock in
their 71-run win over Ivybridge.
Heatcoat had a helping hand from Willand football manager
Clive Jones with 33 towards a total of 223 all out,
Jon Chilcott top scored on 37
Kevin Johnson then claimed seven for 31 to leave Whitchurch
clinging on at 164 for eight when the overs ran out.
Stoke Gabriel were made to pay for letting Yelverton
off the hook as a likely win became a dull draw.
Chris Samargis (3-46), Jeff Baker and George Gillin
were all among the wickets as the Moorlanders were reduced
to 107 for nine,
A last wicket partnership of 54 between Jerry Warland
and tail-ender Geraint Heath saved Yelverton's blushes
and got them up to a defendable 161-9.
The Stoke reply started brightly with Aussie Samargis
hitting a crisp 24. Yelverton skipper Chris Pearson
introduced himself into the attack and was instantly
rewarded as Samargis gave a catch to keeper Mike Chetwynd.
Pearson slowed the scoring rate to a crawl and went
on to take six for16 in a miserly 10-over spell
as Stoke closed on 129 for nine.
Pearson quipped: "It was some fine batting
by Jerry and Geraint that gave us a reasonable total
to defend...They say that life begins at 40, so perhaps
this also applies to bowlers!"
