ELEVEN EAST
Axminster
III enjoyed a sevenwicket win over Feniton
II . Dave Hayball claimed a five- wicket haul,
his 5-16 and a three wicket spell from Mike Summers helped
bounce out Feniton for just 79, then the younger Summers,
Roger, stroked an unbeaten 47 to lead a comfortable run
chase.
Kilmington II and Honiton II
played out an opening day draw. Winn Wilmott
hit a 14 boundary, unbeaten 81 and Ralph Stenning scored
65 as Kilmington closed on 254-7 but Andy Brinsford hit
an unbeaten 63 to hold the Honiton innings together, and
Rob Cheesman got 44 as the reply closed on 208-7, three
wickets for Kilmington's Dave Lavender.
Honiton's club chairman Steve Jennings played in the game
and he said: "It was a good game to play in with
462 runs scored in hot conditions - not the usual May
weather at all! “The difference was in the bowling with
Kilmington bowling very tidily pegging us back and frustrating
us.
To contrast, ours was awful and the 34 extras, mostly
wides, backs that statement!
Take those 34 runs out and we were much closer to their
total. This is where we need to focus and fast!"
The Honiton chairman reserved special mention to Brinsford
and Cheeseman: "Brinny was brilliant today and showed
his all-round abilities whilst Rob slotted in perfectly,
hitting some big shots”.
Uplyme's M Brimacombe hit 69 in his
side's 188-8 but it was not enough to gain a first day
win. That honour went to Ottery St Mary
who, led by a half century from John Edwards and an unbeaten
53 from Steve Forbes, got home with three wickets and
overs to spare.
Fred Drew top scored with 43 and Bruce Inglis got 34 in
the Upottery total of 168 but it was not enough to see
off Woodbury who won by four wickets.
Woodbury 2nd XI picked up a full-house
maximum of 20 points when they defeated visiting Upottery
by four wickets.
The visitors were asked to bat first on a good track and
opening bowler John Patterson soon struck for the home
side with two early wickets.
Fred Drew (43) and Bruce Inglis (34) threatened a big
target, but with their dismissals the rest of the batting
fell away as Upottery were all out for 168 in 44.5 overs.
Kevin Miller claimed 4-31, John Patterson 2-22 and 'Chalky'
White 2-40.
Openers Rob Carter and John Ingham put on 32 for the first
Woodbuury wicket with Carter first out for 23.
Ingham soon followed for six with the score at 43 for
two. Tim Kirk batted well for 33, as did Andy Smale (29)
as Woodbury were cruising at 108 for three.
Three quick dismissals left Woodbury 124 for six and it
was a different game. Mickey Beer calmed any nerves as
hit a fine 27 not out and, aided by Kevin Miller (16no),
saw the side home with four overs in hand.
