E DIVISION WEST– JUNE 9

SOMETHING had to give when two of the four 100 per cent sides clashed at Buckfastleigh and the game was as tight as had been thought with the home side's tail-enders largely the reason Kingserswell didn't beat them.

Kerswell just managed to claim maximum batting points before being all out for 200. Sergio Fedee top scored with 65 and Steve Lacey gave good support with 43.

Mark Sloman took three for 46 for the host club and Gary Blake claimed three for 38.

Will Sykes then led the home reply with 47 and PJ Patel chipped in with 34. But, with the last two at the wicket and the home reply on 135 with 14 overs to go, it looked as if the visitors would leave with the points.

Gary Blake and Andy Ivy, the latter batting with what was later discovered to be a broken rib, proved to a resilient last pair and between them ensured that their side made the draw.

Keyham slip to fourth in what looks set to be a four-club chase for the division's top prize. Kingskerswell sit second five points behind the leaders.

Shaldon became the first side in E Division West to deny Yelverton a 20-point maximum, but they still went down six-wickets to the new outright leaders.

Shaldon skipper James Fulner once again led by example with a top score of 63. Only Sam Mason (18) made any other contribution with the bat but there were 43 extras in the final total of 146 for eight.

Sanjiv Shrivastiv claimed five Shaldon wickets finishing with 5-45 from his 13 overs, Joe Avery took 2-8 and skipper Rob Guy also picked up a wicket.

Yelverton cruised home led by opener Paul Farnham's superb innings of 79 not out. Farnham and Geoff Brain (12) gave their side the perfect start with a 71-run partnership for the first wicket.

After Brain departed Shrivastiv (34) accompanied Farnham to the winning line.

Jay Tuffnell bagged a brace for Shaldon with his two for 16 in five overs.

“We batted better than we have done all season, but I am very disappointed with the all-round fielding which was well below par, I'd expect better in that department from us.” said Shaldon skipper Fulner.

There was an interesting scenario at Exeter CS, where Dunsford were the opposition for the rivals skippers were once master and pupil!

And it was the pupils who taught the teachers a lesson on this occasion, by 164 runs.

Dunsford's Colin Green teaches PE at West Exe Technical College and former pupil Greg Newcombe was his opposite number.

As the game developed more of Green's former pupils came back to haunt him!

Civil chalked up a healthy 241 for six and it was the previous week's bowling hero Richie Burnett who displayed his full array of all-round skills.

Burnett opened the innings and was finally dismissed three overs from the close for a superb century. Burnett and Rehann Carryl (42) added 150 for the third Civil wicket.

Steve Knight, another of Green's old boys, chipped in with 24 whilst Green bagged three wickets, - including Knight's - and Freddie Dudbridge picked up a couple of victims.

The Dunsford reply was restricted to a humble 67 with opener Pete Thomas top scoring with 16 and tail ender Mike Garforth the next best with 11.

Green was caught by Ryan Mills at mid-off and, yes, Mills is one of his pupil.

Kris Calderhead took three for eight in 3.2 overs and yet another former pupil of Green's, Michael Skidmore, bowled a superb opening spell taking 3-19 in 9 overs.

Said winning skipper Newcombe: “I'll put our win down to that wonderful third wicket partnership of ours then that marvelous spell of line-and-length bowling from Michael Skidmore.

Roborough picked up their first win of the season and consigned Ashburton to a third successive defeat with a 77-run victory at the Sports Centre.

The hallmark of the success was Nick Goodchild's 59. He got excellent support from Dave North (36), Rob Gaylard (28) and an unbeaten 32 from Rob Williams.

Ashes' bowlers Chris Pascoe (2-56) and Gordon Colwill (2-42) were desperately unlucky not to see more for their efforts.

Williams then picked up a brace of wickets but the star of the bowling for the hosts   was Martin House with   four for 20 as the visitors were bowled out for 139.

Opener Kevin Nicholls hit a solid half-century but after that it was only the 19 from Marcus West that made any impact on the total.
