THE Second Eleven Competition took an even worse pounding from the weather with just four games surviving – two of them in Plymouth.

Tavistock moved out of the bottom four and towards the relative safety of mid-table on the strength of a six-wicket win over Plymouth Civil Service at Beacon Down.

Skipper Paul Maloney's run of form with the bat continued with a top score of 74 in Civil's total of 163 for eight. Stuart Dent made 25 and Alex Carr 15 not out at the end.

Tavistock captain John McGahey took his cue from Maloney and struck and identical score of 74 to put his side on course for victory.

Tavvy started slowly – David Bennett (2-38) and Carr keeping it tight – but McGahey and David Downham (49) – upped the pace in time to knock the runs off with four balls to spare.

Plymstock's overseas player Denzil Addicott was at a loose end after the 1 st XI game away to Alphington was rained off, so guested for the 2 nd XI against Plymouth 3 rd XI and ended up top scorer in a 67-run win for his club.

Addicott's half-century, and 25 from Duncan Brace, formed the bulk of the runs Plymstock scored in a total of 142 all out. Plymouth captain Al Stewart bagged five for 34.

It wasn't just Addicott Plymouth had to contend with when they batted: Plymstock had former Devon opening bowler Mike Record in their line-up as well.

Record – 41 not that long ago – isn't the fiery paceman who took six for 54 on his Devon debut against Berkshire 17 years ago. But he was too slippery for Plymouth to cope with, taking three for 35 as Plymouth were hustled out for 75. George Barnicott (3-25) and Morgan Parkinson (2-2) were both among the wickets as well.
