YELVERTON
skipper Rob Guy predicted the best is yet to come after
his E Division table toppers dished out an eight-wicket
beating to Keyham & Buckfastleigh.
Only Jon
Mamczynski (31) and both Will Sykes and Greg Robinson,
who each struck 19, made any impression as the K&B
innings closed on 104.
Yelverton's Sanjiv Shrivastiv sent down 13 overs and
returned figures of three for 25. Joel Avery also claimed
a three-wicket haul, his at a cost of 32 runs in ten
overs.
Geoff Brain also picked
up a wicket, his half a dozen over spell saw him finish
with 1-7 whilst skipper Guy also took a wicket
with one of the two balls he sent down!
Shrivastiv (50) and Geoff Brain (15) were the only Yelverton
bats to lose their wickets in the reply. The not-out
batsmen at the close were Gul Khan and Paul Farnham,
the latter with 33 runs to his name.
It's so far so good for Yelverton, who visit second-placed
Exeter Civil Service this Saturday in a game that gives
them the chance to widen the two-point gap between them
at the top.
“We still have lots to do to get us where I'd like to
think we are capable of reaching in terms of game-on-game
performance,” said Guy.
“At this stage of the season, four league games gone
and just a single point unclaimed you could say I am
highly satisfied. But there is still a bit more in the
tank yet.”
EXETER
Civil Service preserved their 100 per cent record in
the E Division West following a six-wicket win at Kingskerswell.
Kerswell batted first and laboured their way to 137,
although it looked for a while that the hosts would
have a far bigger score on the board.
After 15 overs they were
rattling along and just shy of five runs an over until
Kris Calderhead and Ritchie Burnett pulled Civil right
back into the game.
Burnett went on to claim two for 22 in a dozen overs
whilst Calderhead helped himself to five for 41 in 13
overs. Veteran Ryhann Carryl played his part with two
for 12 in nine excellent overs.
A crucial moment came when Burnett caught and bowled
Kerswell's West Indian ace Sergio Fedee for 30. Civil's
only other batsman worth mentioning was Paul Mitchell
with 38.
The run chase was relatively relaxed. Just four wickets
went down, two of which were claimed by Fedee, and there
were still 11 overs to come when the win was confirmed.
Once again it was a Burnett-Calderhead combination that
proved pivotal. Burnett top scored with 53, Calderhead
hit 20 and skipper Greg Newcombe chipped in with 24
as Civil clinched their fourth straight win.
A delighted Newcombe said: “We went into this game a
little light in the batting department and so to come
out of our toughest test to date with a full house of
20 points is a real plus for us.”
ASHBURTON
claimed a first win of the season with a nine-wicket
win over hapless Shaldon, who slipped to a fourth successive
defeat.
Batting first the Teignsiders
were bundled out for just 75 in 36.2 overs with only
Ra Mason troubling the scorer.
Mason, batting at number three, went to the wicket in
the first over and was eventually dismissed in the last
onee for a painstaking 19.
Seamer Matt Coon picked five for 19 in 11 overs whilst
Ashley Harvey grabbed three for 24. Martin Causley (19)
was the only home batsman to lose his wicket - that
claimed by Sam Mason and it was left to Kevin Nicholls
(26no) and Chris Pascoe (27no) to guide the Ashes side
home.
DUNSFORD'S
problems at the foot of the E Division West continued
when they lost by 167 runs to Roborough.
Former Okehampton captain
Nick Godchild (112) and Rob Gaylard (104no) were set
to chalk up a double century stand when Dunsford keeper
Keith Povey whipped off the bails to effect a smart
stumping off Charlie Poustie with the partnership on
199.
The Povey-Poustie combination also claimed another wicket,
Dunsford managed to claim three in all with Poustie
the most successful returning figures of 2-10 in three
overs
Then the nine men of Dunsford were bowled out for just
58, 22 of which came from Keiron Joy. Danny North took
four for 14 for Roborough.
Dunsford skipper Colin Green predicted recently he might
have trouble raising sides in the light of recent heavy
defeats.
On this latest setback Green said: “We were determined
to fulfil the fixture and went with the nine. When you
do that you know you are on a hiding to nothing, but
we gave it our best shot.”
