NOT even ‘Nelson' could save Stoke Gabriel from losing their game against Ivybridge.

Chasing 158 to win, Ivybridge reached the ‘Nelson' number of 111 without losing a wicket.

Jeff Baker stuck then to remove Kevin Jacobs for 43, but with surviving opener Tony Malling batting on to make 87 not out, Ivybridge won by nine wickets with eight overs to spare.

Chris Greenhouse hurried things up at the end by smashing three fours in an over.

Earlier, Stoke's Chris Samargis had attacked the Ivybridge bowling from the start and with Malcolm Coleman compiled 25 in the first four overs.

Samargis went for 27 to the bowling of Nick Thomas (3-35), who made the most of the conditions by taking the first three Stoke wickets.

A fourth-wicket partnership of 48 between Dave Higgins and Tim Nand-Lal (56no) helped edge the total up to 110.

With 10 overs to go Nand-Lal tore a calf muscle and was forced to retire hurt. Clive Burnell (12no) helped marshal the tail over the last 10 overs. He was supported by Nand-Lal who returned late on to push the score up to 157 for seven.

DEPLETED Exeter 3 rd XI had to include three colts – and one of their parents – to make up the numbers for their trip to Babbacombe , where they lost by 79 runs.

Babbacombe were inserted and, after the loss of an early wicket,   progressed steadily for the first 25 overs   then accelerated to reach 218 for six in the 46 overs.

The Babbacombe innings was built around Steve Porter who batted through for 84 not out. Steve Lewis contributed 27 and Craig Ibbotson 28.

For Exeter 12 year old Theo Miller took his first league wicket, that of   Babbacombe   skipper, Ron Thomson for 18. At the other end of the age range, veteran Jeff Stanyer took 3-34.

Exeter's innings started badly – they were 10 for 3 very quickly - but a stand of 53 between Naj Chaudhary (36) and Sam Vaughan (19) created a small recovery.

After that a series of mini-stands raised the total to 139 all out with less than three overs to go.

Theo's father, playing for the first time in many years, made 15 not out.
