PREMIER 2nd XI

SIDMOUTH charge on at the top of the Premier Division 2nd XI table following a 53-run win away to Bovey Tracey.

James Macey gave the 1st XI selectors a nudge by cracking 109. Along the way there was a nine-over partnership with Fionn Wardrop that yielded 79 runs for the fourth wicket.

Simon Sobczak was next best in the total of 221 for eight with 27.

Bovey were all out for 168 in reply having eased off the chase after dipping to 104 for six,

Ben Elphick top scored with 48 and Lewis Hammett made 32, but the score to take notice of was Sam Wyatt-Haines' unbeaten 29.

Wyatt-Haines, who is only 13, was talented spotted early at Stover School and has been a regular in the Devon youth sides for four years. Now at Blundell's, he is one to watch over the next few summers.

The wickets were shared around with Mark Chaplin, Charlie Dibble, Zak Bess and Greg Chaplin taking two each.

Sidmouth remain unbeaten at the top where they lead fellow 100 per centers Exeter by five points.

The city side's latest triumph was by seven wickets at home to North Devon.

Ian Gear hit an unbeaten 53 for North Devon, who got up top 215 for six before running out of overs.

Bob Heaman (27) and James Wollway gave North Devon a 56-run start then Scott Amos (32), Warren Miller (31) and Gear kept the board moving.

Gear and Billy Curtis put on 77 for the sixth wicket. Will Steward (3-36) was the pick of the Exeter bowlers.

The run chase was accomplished with four overs to spare on the back of an unbeaten 72 from in-form Richard Nelsey.

Around Nelsey there were handy contributions from James Parkin (48), James Street (30) and Steward (32).

Hatherleigh collected their first win since being promoted into the top flight when they trounced Plymouth by 90 runs.

It was a day for the golden oldies as skipper Ross Cherrington and Nick Rogers were instrumental in setting up the win.

Andy Collier (73) and Hugh Romans (75) contributed 147 jointly for the third wicket towards a total of 257 for six. Ben Robins took three for 58.

Plymouth were disposed of for 167 in reply – Cherrington (4-23) and Rogers (3-37) showing how it should be done.

Plymouth were 99 for three when the partnership of 71 between John Meredith (47) and Jae Libby (28) was broken. Only Robins (36) stayed long after that.

Exmouth are still waiting for their first league win of the season to arrive after suffering a 38-run defeat away to Plympton.

Plympton totted up 260 for eight declared in 48 of their 50 overs, a total hung around a stand of 75 between Paul Elsey (86) and Richard Skinner.

James Carr chipped in with 58 and Sam Cload had 33. Skipper Billy Buckingham kept it tight to take two for 29.

Exmouth gave it their best shot with Dan Loman (60) and Granr Northover (29) getting stuck in.

Dan Vince scuppered Exmouth's plans with a six-for-39 haul that had them all out for 222 with two overs to go.

 

SANDFORD earned one of the quickest bonus points ever seen in Devon League cricket when they took wickets with the first two balls of their game against Budleigh Salterton.

Pete Steer sent back Mark Hammett and Budleigh skipper Lewis Baker to have a point in the bag.

After that sort of start Budleigh did well to reach 204 all out   - and it was largely down to youngster Lloyd White that they did.

Teenager White compiled a maiden league half century and kept an end going while Lloyd Murrin (17), James Sharkey (14) and Alex Richardson (36) delivered at the other end.

Chris Batten (28) wagged the tail strongly to bring the total up to 204 of 49 overs. The pick of the Sandford bowlers was 15 year old Steer (3-54) and Shaun Cockram (3-39).

With the Sandford score at 75 for 0, the home side looked to be running away with the game.

Joe Marley (1-29) removed Pete Whitby (16) and two more wickets left Sandford 110 for 3 and the game in the balance.

Paul Smith was unmoveable at the other end and a 58-run partnership with Ryan Glass (29) put the game within reach. Smith saw Sandford home with a brilliant 90 not out.
