PREMIER
DIVISION
VETERAN
all-rounder Glen Lammonby made a guest appearance for
Exeter 2nd XI and played a starring role in the 94-run
win over visiting North Devon.
Lammonby
wasn't able to travel with the first team to North Devon
due to work commitments, but stayed behind to help out
the short-handed 2 nd XI.
Brother Derek Lammonby, a former pro with Exeter who
retired at the end of the 2006 season, was lured out
to play and also contributed to the win.
Exeter totalled 220 for seven declared in 46 of their
50 overs with Glen Lammonby top scoring on 57. Shane
Langford (46) and Rob Wass (24) gave Exeter a 67-run
start then Lammonby joined Langford to rack up another
52.
Derek Lammonby chipped in with 32 before the declaration.
Pick of the North Devon bowlers by a distance was Tim
Cross with six for 65.
North Devon needed a decent start if they were going
to make the runs – and 50 for three didn't really
fit the bill.
Jamie Woolaway (30) and Mark Overton (22) pushed the
total up to 111 for five, then it all went wrong.
Glen Lammonby's spin claimed three for 11, Derek's seamers
picked up two for 43 and with Alvin Pollard weighing
in with three for 16 North Devon crashed to 126 all
out.
North Devon were bowled out three balls into the first
of the extra overs earned by Exeter skipper Pat Steward
for his early declaration.
Exeter's 20-point haul puts them joint top in the first
table of the season with Sidmouth, who trounced Exmouth
by 138 runs on the Maer.
SOUTH
Devon suffered a pasting at Plympton last season –
they were bowled out there for 26 – so whatever
happened this time round couldn't be any worse!
South Devon, who did well
to get 11 players on the pitch due to early season selection
headaches, lost by seven wickets after being bowled
out for just 118.
Brian Allen (23 off 100 balls) and Neil Matthews (26)
resisted while wickets fell at the other end to former
Paignton seamer Jamie Pfeiffer (5-28), James Carr (2-17)
and Danny Hawker (2-25).
A total of 119 to win was never going to bother the
defending Premier Division 2nd XI champions unduly and
they knocked off the runs in just 21 overs.
Chris Bunny (55no) and Dave Walter (21) got the first
82 out of the way, leaving Carr (20no) to tie up the
loose ends with opener Bunny.
South Devon skipper Dave Amery will be looking for an
improvement when Exmouth visit Marsh Road this Saturday.
JAMES
Macey hit a top score of 95 as Sidmouth amassed 222
for six. A ton looked there for the taking until Billy
Buckingham snared him lbw with the team total on 193.
Other contributions came
from Graham Mundy (22) he put on 67 with Macey –
and 29 from skipper Saju Patidar.
Buckingham (2-28) and Richard Arnold (2-29) bore the
brunt of the bowling burden for Exmouth, who were skittled
out for 84 in reply.
James Windsor's 17 was the best of a sad set of scores
as Mark Jasper (4-32), Nick Gomersall (3-40) and Charlie
Dibble (2-9) put the skids under Exmouth.
Next in the early table are Plympton, who cruised to
an easy seven-wicket win over struggling South Devon,
who did well to get 11 players on the pitch due to early
season selection headaches.
Brian Allen (23) and Neil Matthews (26) resisted while
wickets fell at the other end to Jamie Pfeiffer (5-28),
James Carr (2-17) and Danny Hawker (2-25).
A total of 119 to win was never going to bother
the defending Premier Division 2 nd XI champions unduly
and they knocked off the runs in just 21 overs.
Chris Bunny (55no) and Dave Walter (210 got the first
82 out of the way, leaving Carr (20no) to tie up the
loose ends with opener Bunny.
BUDLEIGH
Salterton had the thick end of a draw at Plymouth in
their first game back in the Premier Division.
Skipper Ian Taylor was looking
to recapture the form that swept Budleigh to promotion
from the A Division last season and the batsmen responded
by putting 230 for four on the board.
Plymouth never looked like getting the runs –
20 overs into their 50 they were behind the clock at
59 for two – but Budleigh couldn't get them out
either.
Taylor rotated his bowlers – Neil Murrin had a
go amongst others in attempt to break partnerships –
but Plymouth held on to claim the draw at 164 for eight.
“We got the basics right to and overall we batted, bowled
and most importantly fielded well which has let us down
in the past.
“Every player played a important role and that's what
we will need in all matches this season as there are
no easy games in this division.”
Budleigh have the afternoon off this Saturday as they
should have been playing Torquay, who have dropped out
of the competition.
Their next game is against
North Devon in two weeks time.
Rob Newing and Murrin gave Budleigh a steady start of
26 in the first 10 overs. The stand ended when Steve
Mattock dismissed Murrin for 15.
Next man James Burton attacked from the off and caught
Newing from a standing start to reach his 50. He was
out with 20 overs left for 59
Taylor and Newing pushed the score past 200, at which
point Newing got out for 85. He had hit 11 fours and
two sixes from 128 balls faced.
Some lusty blows from Llouyd Murrin and Chris Horne
completed the innings.
Plymouth went slowly to 53 without loss and it needed
a switch to spin to start brining wickets.
Burton (2-33) and Liam White (2-22) got among the wickets
and once Plymouth realised they would not win it became
a battle for Plymouth to get them out.
Ben Ferrao (68) and Keith Barlow (33) shored up the
innings as Plymouth held on.
