COCKSPUR
CUP ROUND-UP
EXETER
stormed into the third round of the Cockspur Cup on
the back of a 47-run win over Taunton on the County
Ground.
Mike Wilkinson top scored
with 58 in an Exeter tally of 202 for six from 45 overs.
Simon Bird made 47 and opener Glen Lammonby weighed
in with 41. All three of Exeter's leading run getters
were dismissed by Matt Bulbeck (4-49).
Bulbeck, who was with Somerset and player for England
U19 before injury killed his professional career,
has joined Taunton this season after four years with
Torquay.
Six of the best from Exeter skipper Jon Tipper (6-32)
went a long way towards bowling Taunton out for 155
in reply with 10 balls to go.
Only opener Lee Cooper (47) made a significant contribution
to the Taunton cause.
Bird (2-19) wrapped things up at the end for Exeter,
who will be away to Bridgwater in the next round on
June 1.
CORNWOOD
are on course for a Cockspur Cup clash with arch rivals
Bovey Tracey after dispatching Cornwall Premier side
Truro by eight runs in the second-round tussle at Oak
Park.
The Corns suffered a setback
before they started with veteran all-rounder Dave Tall
pulling out with a torn hamstring.
In the subsequent reshuffle, opening bowler Matt Butterworth
had to keep wicket, which could have put the Corns at
a disadvantage.
Cornwood totalled 169 before their overs ran out with
Chris Beaumont hitting a top score of 47 on his first-team
debut.
Beaumont has been around the club for a while, but generally
prefers to turn out in the 3 rd XI. His on-drive to
get off the mark was the shot of the day.
Close behind in the style stakes was Duncan Boase, whose
belted a six over extra-cover on his way to a brisk
40.
Other handy contributions came from skipper Jason Hall
(25) and Butterworth (27).
Cornwall county captain Tom Sharp led the Truro reply
with 70, but lacked support from the rest of the team.
With three overs to go a Truro win was still on the
cards, despite a miserly spell of nine overs for the
same number of runs from Dave Petherbridge. The target
was nine to win, then Sharp got out.
Hall picked up three wickets in the final over to finish
with four for 17 as Truro were dismissed for 162
Coming next for Cornwood are Bovey Tracey, with whom
they share top spot in the Devon League A Division.
Cornwood were two points behind Bovey after beating
Bradninch last Saturday, but have gone level after being
refunded two points deducted for failing to make the
17-overs-and-hour run rate in their game at Bovey three
weeks ago.
League officials decided Cornwood were not to blame
for the slow over rate, which was caused by breaks in
play for which they could not be held responsible.
BOVEY
Tracey remain unbeaten in all matches this season following
an 86-run win over Grampound Road in the Cockspur Cup
on Sunday. Bovey scored 219 for eight in 45 overs against
the Cornish visitors.
Left-hander Andy
Kingdon hit a top score of 76 - he and Peter Bradley
(28) hoisted 78 for the first wicket - then Chris Bradley
29, Peter Bradley 28 and Ben Ayres 25 chipped in.
Grampound Road never really recovered from slumping
to 23 for four early in their reply and were all out
for 133 in the 34th over.
Ryan Bougard turned in a virtuoso performance
for Bovey with three catches and three wickets for 13
runs.
