C DIVISION

STOKE Gabriel 2nd XI overcame near neighbours Ipplepen by three wickets in a close-run affair.

Pens lost a wicket to the first ball of the game: opener Alan Boon out to Mark Jackson. When Stephen Nand-Lal removed the second Ipplepen opener Dave Alsop, the visitors were 21 for two.

Mike Perkin was introduced into the attack and took two wickets to leave Ipplepen tottering at 46 for five.

Steve Harris watched as partners came and went at the other end. He dug in to score an excellent 50.

Harris received support from Rob Hay and Phil Harvey, including an eighth-wicket partnership between Hay and Harris.

Jeff Baker bowled tightly to take two wickets for just 21 runs in 10 overs. Jackson (3-48) and Nand-Lal (2-37) returned to the attack and helped restrict Ipplepen to 127 for nine off their 46 overs.

Stoke's innings did not start well as Rob Hay had Malcolm Coleman caught with the score on five. Boon bowled three maidens before a groin injury forced him out of the attack.

Tim Nand-Lal joined Jeff Baker to add 47 for the second wicket. Nand-Lal hit six fours before he fell to a good catch by Keith Wakeham, off Harris (4-36).

The miserly Wakeman bowled nine overs for the same number of runs as Pens kept the pressure on.

Dave Higgins held the Stoke middle order together with a well-crafted 30. Three wickets falling left Stoke 108 for six, but Jackson (13) got them virtually home, leaving Doug Ansley and Chris Life to score the winning runs.

OTTERY St Mary II were the visitors to Yelverton on Saturday. Home skipper Kevin Beare won the toss and had no hesitation deciding to bat first.

Beare himself did not last long and was dismissed with the score on 7. Dan Vince was joined at the wicket by Ricky McDowell and they forged a parthership of 57 before Vince fell for a well played 33.

Gerry Keen joined McDowell at the wicket and their partnership ended on 85 when McDowell fell to a catch behind.

Yunis Suliman joined Keen at the wicket and mid innings drinks were taken with the score on 89 - 3.

Keen (4) then lost his wicket straight after the drinks break break followed soon after by Dave Scott for a duck.

With the score now on 89-5 and having lost three wickets for four runs, some repair work was required.

Vice captain Chris Pearson joined Suliman in the middle and some watchful batting mixed in with the occasional lusty blow slowly enabled Yelverton to regain their momentum with a partnership of 37.

Suliman (24) departed with the score on 126 and evergreen Jerry Warland strode to the wicket.

Throwing caution to the wind Warland struck some lusty blows and with Pearson (27) took the score to 155 before Pearson was caught at square-leg.

Warland (14) marshalled the tail and despite losing Andy Alford for a duck, Adrian Hood with some 'silky' drives off the front and back foot took the total to 180 before Hood was bowled having a heave across the line by the first ball of the final over leaving Tony Carter undefeated on four not out

Ottery bowler Ricahardson hadfigures of 5-40. From 89-5 skipper Beare was satisfied with a total of 180.

Accurate bowling by Yelverton's opening bowlers Hood and Carter ensured that Ottery did not get away to a 'flyer' and the pressure created soon reaped rewards as Carter got a ball to bounce sharply to have Flicker (0) caught acrobatically by a diving Warland at slip.

After one close LBW shout Carter had a similar appeal upheld to send back the other opening batsman with the score on 38.

Ottery then had a period on top as Mann (37) and skipper Iley (14) tucked into some loose deliveries.

This third-wicket partnership was broken on 75 by Vince who had Mann caught at the wicket.

Vince bowled his 13 overs straight through for the excellent figures of 13-2-28-4.

Vince also accounted for the Ottery skipper Iley to leave the score on 83-4 with the overs running out fast.

Two more wickets fell to Vince and Suliman also bagged a brace as wickets fell steadily and Ottery nominated to shut up shop and pat back the final few overs for the draw.

The returning Carter had the final recognised batsman Burns (29) caught on the boundary by Pearson off the final delivery of the innings as he looked for a boundary and an extra batting point.

Ottery closed their innings on 147 for nine.

Yelverton now sit in third place behind Ivybridge & Kingsbridge.

D DIVISION

EXETER 3rd XI paid the price for bowling inaccurately to a batsman with pedigree when they met Dartington & Totnes at Bicton College.

Ian Bransdon used to play in the Premier Division with Barton and Torquay, but plays purely for fun now and concentrates on his squash.

Bransdon helped himself to 125 not out as D&T cracked along to 249 all out.

Jack Hocking (28) was next best with the bat, while erratic bowling added 31 in wides.

Exeter's old-age pensioner and captain Jeffrey Stanyer – still going strong at 70 long after collecting his bus pass - took five for 64 in 13 overs.

Exeter started at a rapid pace, 40 coming up in the sixth over. The run rate remained high, but wickets fell regularly and the team was all out for 135 in the 26th over.

Mike Ruisling took four for 29 for D&T and Dave Carter three for 57.

TONY Lacey had Ashburton 2nd XI buzzing on his return to the side as he hit an unbeaten century in the 99-run win over Plymouth CS 3rds.

Lacey (104no), with support from Vernon Coon (28) and Max Ellis (13), hit two sixes and nine fours and batted from start to finish in Ashes total of 194 for six.

Only two Civil batsmen reached double figures in the reply: Kevin Robjohns (15) and Richards (11).

Russ Lacey bowled a tidy spell of 1-26 off 10 overs. Jerry Crouch (3-20) shouldered the bulk of the overs while new man Ben MacDermot (3-25) playing in his first game in nine years looks a useful prospect.

Ellis (2-2) mopped up the tail as Civil were bowled out for 95.

D DIVISION EAST

WOODBURY 2nd XI got back to winning ways after last week's defeat with a 71-run win at home to Upottery II.

Woodbury were put into bat on a damp, slow track and got off to a good start with openers Kevin Miller (28) and David Allen (20) putting on 35 for the first wicket.

The middle order slumped, with only Rob Carter (13) getting double figures, as Woodbury collapsed to 73 for six against some accurate bowling from the visitors.

Vice-captain ‘Chalky' White (42no) and 15-year-old Ross Jarvis (10) then put on 50 runs for the seventh wicket to help the score along to 137 for nine from their 46 overs, giving the bowlers something to defend. Simon Bath bowled well taking four for 23 from 13 overs.

In reply Upottery got off to a steady start putting on 27 for the first wicket before Rob Jones made the breakthrough.

The introduction of spinner Mickey Beer turned the game on its head as he ran through the visitors taking career best figures of seven for 15 from only six overs to skittle Upottery for 66.

Rob Jones supported him well taking three for 20 from 10.3 and Simon Butler was luckless in bowling nine overs for 15 runs. David Allen and Ross Jarvis both took smart catches.

E DIVISION

TORQUAY 3rd XI missed captain Ellie Fielding when they visited Cornwood 3rds.

Fielding, the six-wicket heroine of the win over Woodland Fort seven days earlier was taking part in the annual Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor.

Torquay clearly missed Fielding in the attack as the Corns rattled along to 275 for two with Chris Beaumont scoring 123.

Richard Pastewski (22) had the only score of any note as Torquay were dismissed for 102 to lose by 173 runs.
