CHERITON
Fitzpaine are paying a touching tribute to former player
Sam Butterfield and his wife Michala when they play
a memorial match tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon.
Sam and
his new wife were both killed in a car crash in India
in January while on honeymoon
According to Indian newspaper reports, the couple were
travelling to Jaisalmer, known as the Golden City, when
their taxi collided head-on with an empty lorry. The
taxi driver, Ramrakh Yadav, from Delhi, was killed in
the crash, about 30 miles from Bikaner, where the couple
had spent the previous night.
The game between Bill Owen's XI and Cheriton Fitzpaine
CC) is being played in their memory and the winners
will receive the Butterfield Emmett Memorial Cup.
Proceeds of the game will be shared between Breakthrough
Breast Cancer and Tools for Self Reliance, two charities
whose aims were very important to Sam and Michala.
Sam, the middle one of three brothers from nearby Sandford,
was a keen rugby player and a good cricketer. He played
both sports at a good standard.
Sam had been part of an invitational side organised
by Bristol solicitor Bill Owen. The Bill Owen's XI played
Bradninch for many years and more recently have had
an annual challenge match with Cheriton Fitzpaine.
'Anyone who knew Sam and Michala and would like to go
along to the Memorial Match would be very welcome,'
said Cheriton Fitzpaine's Charles Sheldrake.
'The game starts at 2pm and tea - something Sam was
very partial to - will be at around 4:30pm.'
Sam and his wife were both barristers working in Bristol
at the time they married. Sam played rugby for the Imperial
club.
Sam was called to the Bar in 1999 and was a member of
the Western Circuit. He was the son of Sir Alexander
Neil Logie Butterfield.
