Selection for the National Physical disability Squad are you working hard to get Noticed

27/03/2012

The first ever International cricket match for persons with Physical difficulties was played in January in Dubai by England and Pakistan. Unfortunately it was not good news for the English team as Pakistan went on to win all matches convincingly. This sends the message out to all players in Devon with Physical disabilities that if you work hard in pre-season training and get some good figures either batting or bowling you will be pushing for trials for the national squad. So it is all up to you to get the job done to push for selection for the national squad. Work with your respective clubs in training and in all your league matches as you are being watched by England and Wales Cricket Board disability national disability cricket coach and his support team.

Devon Fixtures for the 2012 season now out

The 2012 cricket season is nearly upon us and work is well under way to make it a successful one, Devon's fixtures will take them far and wide up to Warwick and of to the likes of Surrey and the Isle of Wight. Profiling is still under way to make players eligible to play in the newly formed England and Wale’s cricket Board County championship.  So if you are dragging your heels getting your medical evidence together to profile your disability please give it the utmost urgency.

For those that have a physical disability a special profiling day will be held at the rose bowl in Hampshire and transport will be arranged to get you all up there and back though I warn you in advance it will be a long day. The fixtures for the 2012 season are listed below, we shall hopefully fulfil all our obligations as we always do and if you have any problems our queries regarding assistance with travel expenses etc please contact Perry sprung via e mail at perry.sprung@devoncricket.co.uk and he will get back to you as soon as possible.

Devon finishes the 2010/2011 cricket season with lots of positives to build upon

The 2010/2011 cricket season proved to be very challenging for Devon and unfortunately we finished bottom of the British Association for cricketers with disabilities/England and Wales cricket Board hard ball southern division last. However there were a lot of matches that Devon could and should have won. However some players had their finest ever season with their personal averages well above that of their previous. On the field the other counties with greater resources such as Surrey and Hampshire etc showed us the way ahead in how they both played and trained. Devon though fought their corner well and a lot of matches could have gone either way but unfortunately some of the areas lacking in our game were exposed.

Of the field great progress has been made and we now have four squad members who successfully acquired their England and Wales Cricket Board Coaches association level two qualifications along with three other squad players successfully completing their Umpires courses. From this the Devon disability cricket club  now have their own coaches and umpires along with a squad that have players with a great range of disabilities from amputees to those with mild learning disabilities so the future is looking very bright indeed.

For winter training and coaching there will be various coaching days at the Devon Indoor cricket centre on the Exeter University campus. However starting in November there will be regular weekly training at Paignton community college in Torbay region of South Devon. Full details of the time and days for this will be posted on the Devon cricket Boards website on November the third, and there will be individual coaching plans for all players who attend by fully qualifies coaches if they feel they need it. Everyone is welcome to attend from advance players to complete novices who have never held a cricket bat before. No matter what your disability you are welcome to attend we cater for everyone no matter what your disability be it physical or mental health/learning difficulty, this covers everything from amputees to the blind/deaf and persons with all levels of learning disability/difficulties.

If any person needs some individual support please just contact Perry Sprung  via e mail or telephone on perry.sprung@devoncricket.co.uk , 07861435502 and when possible he will get back to you.

Returning to the 2010/2011 cricket season a big thank you goes out to all person and companies that helped  support the Devon Disability cricket club, as without their help both financial and in volunteering their own free time coaching giving lifts etc to players struggling to get to matches the club would struggle to fulfil its obligations and core principles in helping the disabled play cricket and improving their life through cricket. Please check back to the disability cricket boards website for further updates on training and opportunities as along with the full winter training program there will be lots of good news to come on all fronts regarding disability cricket.

Devon Disability have a superb day of Cricket at Tavistock and Hold their own against a Tavistock Side packed with Talent

On Sunday the 3rd of July the Devon disability cricket club played a friendly match against Tavistock at their ground on the edge of Dartmoor. Tavistock opened the batting and before long were two wickets down, they then recovered and strode on and set a healthy score of 226 for four wickets of 40 over's. The Devon disability squad then put up a valiant effort and responded with 127 for seven wickets of 40 over's with some superb batting displays, especially from the Captain Karl Beasant who retired at the close with thirty five runs and carried his bat back to the pavillion.
Tavistock had several first team players in their team for the day and their quality shone through with some superb batting and bowling, the match was played in excellent spirits and the teas were superb. This will become a regular anual fixture for the Devon disability cricket club in their bid to expand out into rural Devon and attract more players.

Below are more recent photos from all of Devon matches up to date so far this season.

Devon Suffer heavy defeat at the hands of Warwickshire

After the recent joy of Jayesh Bhagat, Paul Jelly, Mike Beer and Karl Beasant being selected for trials with the England disability High performance squad came the Devon disability cricket teams recent worst defeat to league newcomers Warwickshire. Devon were put into bat  and the openers Karl Beasant and Perry Sprung were ticking along nicely at nearly 5 an over. Sprung was hit on the right arm by a bouncer  and struggled thereafter and soon both he and Karl Beasant were out with 29 overs left to play. A batting collapse then followed with 3 ducks until Brian Magee settled the ship, but Devon were soon all out for 97.

Warwickshire went on to make a 100 with six wickets remaining to post their first ever victory. Devon's next match is home to Essex at Cornwood CC on the 26th of June. With a period of self reflection for all, and some hard work on their game with their clubs and coaches, a return to form is just around the corner. As per usual the game against Warwickshire was played in a superb spirit and the teas were absolutely amazing, lots of new friendships were formed at the match and next seasons match where Devon will be victorious will be awaited with much apprehension. Several friendlies are booked in between now and Devon's next match so watch this space for the coming victories. so it is all to do now for the rest of the season. Go Devon!

Devon lose at Hampshire

On a flat batting track at Mays Bounty Cricket Devon lost out due to a brilliant 150 runs by a Hampshire opening batsman. The two stand out performers for Devon were Mike Beer scoring an excellent half century and Matthew Beasant with 38 not out off just 20 balls.

Captain Karl Beasant scores 58 not out as Devon come up a few runs short against the Isle of Wight

On a windy day in the Isle of Wight, Devon played their first away match of the season. The toss was won by the Isle of Wight and they decided to bat first. They got off to a good start scoring 60 runs for the loss of 1 wicket of the first 10 overs, with Paul Jelley making the early breakthrough.

After that some disciplined spin bowling by Jayesh Bhagat and Matthew Beasant halted the run rate and combined with some excellent fielding brought about a flurry of wickets which stunted the IOW's progress.

An excellent innings by the IOW wicketkeeper-batsman helped his team recover from 193 for 8 at the end of their 40 overs.

Wicket takers for Devon were Jayesh Bhagat (4-28 from 8 overs), Karl Beasant (2-22 from 8 overs) and Paul Jelley with 2 wickets.

The Devon reply began with Jayesh Bhagat and Perry Sprung opening the batting. After a positive start, a flashy lofted cover drive from Sprung flew to the boundary. Unfortunately he was caught behind moments later looking for a repeat dose. This brought Mike Beer to the crease. Bhagat played some nice shots before he was trapped LBW by the IOW opening bowler for 20. Captain Karl Beasant then joined Beer in the middle, after which Beer departed due to a large stroke of luck by the bowler, with the ball being played down off his bat before bouncing off the floor and just managing to clip a bail off the stumps.

Karl Beasant went on to hit 58 not out and combined with big hitter Paul Jelley, Devon looked to be mounting a late assault on the IOW total, however when Jelley was caught the game looked to be over for Devon but not before Brian McGee stamped his authority and hit a quickfire 9.

In the end Devon came up short, however as they gain more experience in a difficult league, success is sure to be round the corner.

03/05/2011
Devon Put up a determined effort but are beaten by a Quality Surrey cricket team with England international players in their ranks

The Devon disability cricket team lost its first match of the season against Surrey at the Cloakham lawn sports centre home to Axminster town CC on Sunday the 1st of May.
Despite having Surrey on the ropes at the start of their innings at two wickets for nine runs Surrey went on to put up an impressive innings of 215 for 9. Jayesh Bhagat, the team’s first player of Indian descent, took three wickets in his first game, Paul Jelly, last years top all rounder, took 2 wickets along with Matthew beasant, while Karl beasant took one.

In the field the teams’ new additions made some impressive fielding displays, with some essential stops from Brian McGee and Jordi Furze.

Perry Sprung opened the batting with new boy Jayesh Bhagat and a good partnership was formed until he was run out by a superb throw from the Surrey Captain half way between mid of and long of while looking for some sneaky runs.

Jayesh Bhagat went on to be Devon’s top scorer with 32 runs and Devon ended up with 96 all out. Despite this loss Devon’s performance was a huge improvement on last season against Surrey and the opposition were full of praise for this huge improvement as Surrey had several England disability players amongst their team, and whose class showed in the final result.

This match was Karl Beasant's first as Captain with Paul Jelly as vice captain. It was played for a trophy named after Jordi Furze and Christopher Lodge this led to the trophy being named the Furzelodge cup. Jordi Furze suffers with cerebral Palsy but plays through the pain barrier to stay on the field at all times, and  last season’s Surrey Captain Christopher Lodge helped Jordi with his Batting as much as he could. From this a great friendship was struck up which rubbed off on county relationships and the matches between the two counties are to be played for the Cup as well as league position and points.

The Trophy was presented by Les Haynes, Axminster town cricket club president. Surrey’s Cricket Development manager. On behalf of her team Sharon Eyers expressed her thanks and gratitude for a great day cricketing. They are looking forward to playing Devon again so much so there is a possibility of playing next years match at the Oval, funds and dates available permitting. All in all a great match was had by all and Devon can take a lot from the improved performances and with some extra net practice for the batsmen victories should be plentiful for the rest of the season.

Warwickshire are the only team Devon have not played against before and we are looking forward to making new friends there. Negotiations are underway with Somerset to play a cup competition between the two county sides with a match both home and away, hopefully we will have all the prospective match dates sorted out as soon as possible so we can all plan for the season ahead and get hotels booked for those wanting to entertain overnight stays etc. At present we are looking at the possibility of playing a couple of matches on a mini tour at the Isle of Wight to correspond with our County match commitments. As soon as anything is confirmed all details will be posted on the website. Pre season training starts officially this weekend on Sunday the 9th January, 2011 at ten o clock in the morning at Paignton Community College and will run through till twelve.  Preparations for next season are underway as we speak and hopefully we will have some good news for you soon. Ian Martin has announced that their will be a national Physical disability cricket squad which will be coached by Chris Ellison and supported by  development officer  Neil Bradshaw. I am sure all of the Devon Players will offer their congratulations to both and look forward to meeting them some time in the future for positive dialogue and work towards improving the game and standards of disability cricket as a whole. As mentioned before we are still looking for new members and everyone is welcome to come along and join the squad no matter what type or level of disability you have, just get in contact with Perry Sprung on 07861435502 or by e mail on perry.sprung@devoncricket.co.uk
Weekly training will commence in January so watch this space for updates on location and times etc.

Devons first season in the Disability cricket world was a challenging, fun and sometimes controversial one. Despite all the obstacles in our way and some times lack of players we have managed to finish third in the British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities southern counties hard ball league. If you check on the official BACD website we are shown as finishing fourth. But if you add our point for wickets taken and runs scored which have not been added for our last two games we will be in third position.

Of special note was the bravery of our players, most of all young Jordi Furze!!!! Despite his disabilities he played every match and gave it is all when wracked with pain and near collapse against able bodied opponents. A special thank you goes out to Chris Lodge the outstanding Surrey player and amazing batsman, who was always on hand to help Jordi when he was batting to make sure he got the most out of his games against Surrey. We all look forward to playing against him next season thougH not necessarily being knocked around the park for fours and sixes.

A big thank you goes out to our Captain Mike Beer who captained a team to third position despite a lack of players and sometimes challenging match conditions. A credit to him and his skills without which Devon would have struggled. Paul Jelley was the outstanding batsman of the season with the most runs scored and had an round superb season both playing for Devon and Abbotskerswell. Of special note was the Beasant family who's contribution to the disability squad was unmatched since the disability cricket team was formed, Karl and Matthew both had fantastic seasons for Devon and Paignton Cricket Club. The guys proved invaluable in the bowling and batting attack. Their parents Linda and Steve deserve a special thank you for all the work behind the scenes that they do. When the disability squad players were getting match experience playing in mid week friendlies at Paignton Cricket Club Linda would bring down picnic hampers and look after the players and give them lifts to matches etc.

Unfortunately we could not send any players to the Malvern tournament as we were only contacted four days before it was due to start to put players forward, we still do not know who our regional manager is but we will keep asking questions who is so we can put players forward next year for selection.

We should have two to three players doing ECB cricket coaching courses in the next couple of months, so we will have trained coaches on hand to help out next season. This will put us in a good position to do more exhibition coaching sessions in special needs school and perhaps take the game of cricket into more challenging communities where sport is not neccesarily available.
Winter training sessions will soon be posted on here once dates are confirmed and we already have some promising new players waiting to attend and join the team along with Danny Johnston a learning disability player who joined towards the end of last season, and turned out to be a superb cricketer and team Joker!!!!

One last thing a special thank you goes out to Richard Gilmour, the Chairman, and all the members of Paignton Cricket who supported the disability squad by letting players gain match experience by playing them as a matter of priority in all midweek matches. Without their support we would not have finished so well this season as they put all their facilities at our disposal whenever they were free. Abbotskerswell were also great supporters and Paul Jelley became a second team regular there and has benefited superbly from using their facilities and coaching.

Disability cricket is growing at an ever faster pace. This season has seen the Southern Counties British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities hard ball league grow to five teams. Next season may see the inclusion of Somerset, Kent and maybe more counties entering teams in the hard ball league. This can only be good for the game as all the players will get to play more cricket than before.

In Devon we have gradually picked up more players as the season has progressed. Sadly we have also lost some but this highlights areas of the game that we have to work on to make it more inclusive, so everyone can feel valued and part of the team.

Negotiations for kits sponsors for next season are ongoing. Various small companies have shown interest in sponsoring individual players and the team as a whole for next season. Hopefully we will build on our sponsors from last season, the most generous being Gary of Redback cricket, along with Pennine cricket, San Andreas Fault cricket, Lekka Cricket, Laver and Wood, Uzi sports, Gunn and Moore and various other small companies and individuals who all sent in equipment.

Without all these generous donations we would have struggled to have put a team out. Of special note is the unwavering support of the Devon Cricket Board and their staff who have supplied the team with fantastic shirts this season and have provided training facilities for us to use.  Next week the dates for winter training at the Devon indoor cricket centre will be posted along with their activity schedule. At present we are in negotiations with various Counties to have an indoor tournament to keep everyone on their toes and keen for next season
