Devon County Sports Under-14 Finals
The Devon County Sports Cup Under 14 Finals Day took place at Cullompton CC on July 18th. A good crowd watched a 3 team competition after Woodbury CC were forced to withdraw due to an unavoidable clash.

In the first game Cullompton beat Whimple by 5 wickets after bowling them out for 88 with Toby Maddocks doing the most damage with figures of 4 overs 0 maidens 5 wickets for 2 runs. Cullompton lost 5 wkts in knocking the runs off with M.Bristow 26 not out, J. Burden causing problems with the ball getting 2-22 in his 4 overs.

In the second game Budleigh Salterton scored 152 for 4 wickets with both H.Parkin 40 & S.Conway 43 having to retire. J Morley finished the innings with 34 not out. A.Evens took 2-49 in his 4 overs. Whimple looked as though they would get close to the target but when the overs closed they had 127 for 7 wkts with W.Wilson 27, J.Bagshot 24 and F Wright 25 not out. L.Marley 4 overs cost him 23 runs getting 3 wkts & T.Shoen finished with 2 wkts for 13 runs in his 4 overs.

In the final game Cullompton won the toss & totalled 112 for 9 wkts D.Paul 24, M.Bristow 26 & O Stephenson 20 all keeping the score ticking over with W.Pace 3-15 & T.Seldon 2-5 doing their best to keep the score down.In reply Budleigh looked as though they would stroll to the winning total with an opening partnersip of 58 between H.Parkin & C.Ellis both scoring 25. This was until Toby Maddocks came on to bowl in his spell of 4 overs 0 maidens 10 runs 4 wickets the score changed to 71 for 6. Budleigh tried to rally but could not fully recover & closed on 100 for 7.

Thus Cullompton emerged as champions by 12 runs. It was no suprise that Adrian Codling the League Chairman announced that Toby Maddocks was the player of the day with his excellent bowling figures in both the games. His figures were 8 overs 2 maidens 12 runs 9 wickets a fantastic feat for a young player at this level.

Peter Howard Trust Fund Cricket Days
Parents have been full of praise for the PHTF’s second cricket day of 2010 on June 20th at Clyst Hydon. It was an excellent day run by Paul Diamond, who was brilliant with the youngsters. Club coach Stuart Eaglesome and Adrian Codling assisted with the coaching whilst Keith Wood and John Gush helped with the umpiring. Adrian’s partner Trudy ran a very effective draw, and Carol Wood ran the bar and sold food.

23 boys and 1 girl aged between 7 and 9 attended. The schedule consisted of a warm up, bowling drills including a competition, fielding drills including backing up and running between the wicket skills. It all came together in a game at the end.

The standard for the age was good and improved as the day went on. All the parents stayed and were very impressed with the coaching and the lovely setting at Clyst Hydon. The PHTF would like to express its gratitude to all those who contributed.

Monday May 30th saw the first of 2010's Peter Howard Trust Fund Cricket Days take place at Exmouth CC. The morning session was for under-13 players, and the afternoon one for under-11s. About 2 dozen players were in each group. Clubs had been invited to nominate the best of their players who were not already playing County or District cricket.

After a warmup and fielding drill, each session took the form of a pairs game in which the conditions of a 40-over match were simulated. On-field coaches were on hand to highlight specific coaching points as they arose. As well as having an enjoyable cricket match in fine weather on a good wicket, all the players gained a valuable insight into the requirements and pressures of the longer formats of the game.

Like last year the day was planned and led by Trevor Griffin, who can take the lion's share of the credit for the event's success. He was ably supported by Will Steward, and 3 younger coaches simultaneously learning and teaching: Jacob Crouch, Tom Radley and Jake Choules. Trevor's wife Gemma dealt with the player admin (and equipment sales), Trust treasurer Adrian Codling MC'd, his partner Trudie ran the draw, and John Gush and Jon Kelsey umpired.

The PHTF would like to express its gratitude to everyone who supported the event, but especially to Trevor, a full time professional cricket coach (more details here) who gave his time freely to run the day. We are also grateful to EDYCL cup sponsors Somerset County Sports, who donated fabulous draw prizes, and to Bryan Fishlock and Peter Langford of Exmouth CC who gave us the use of their ground and an excellent wicket for the day.

Some pictures of the day's activity can be found on the Peter Howard Trust Fund page.
