LATEST DACO NEWS – MAY 2013
Message from the Chairman
Ladies and Gentlemen,
A new season is underway and our hopes and expectations of a long, dry and warm summer are about to be revealed but whatever the weather, cricket will play on.
During the long dark months of winter, 12 new scorers have emerged from SL1, 18 new umpires from UL1, 5 from UL1A, 8 from UL2C and 2 from UL2 courses – to all of them, heartiest congratulations. Areas have had sessions to prepare for the new season, including a new venture tried in the South, supported by the South Devon Cricket Development Group and hosted by Brixham CC, under the guidance of David Moseby – “An evening with Dave”! Despite appalling acting by D. Moseby and G. Lane, 30 or so intrepid umpires gathered to discuss and play out various scenarios – fun really was had by all!
2013 sees the Devon Cricket League adopting “Win/Lose” cricket throughout the League – it should provide more enjoyment for the players and great theatre for the spectators. Despite the best efforts of many people, some errors have appeared in the DCL Handbook and Supplement – my advice is go by these tomes so that everyone is seen to be “singing from the same hymn sheet”.
It is good to see that on-line scoring is growing in popularity and has a large and increasing audience monitoring matches via the Internet on computers and smart phones.
Many volunteers have worked long and hard to get the new season up and running and I know that their hard work and enthusiasm will be rewarded by the pleasures of watching cricket being played hard but fairly, “In the best possible taste” and, obviously, in The Spirit of Cricket.
Have a wonderful summer.
Gavin Lane
