SANDFORD are heading for a fourth-place finish in the A Division after beating Lewdown by 58 runs to move ahead of them in the table.

Richard Foan was easily the man  of the match for Sandford with 49 in their total of 274 for six – and five wickets as Lewdown were bowled out for 216 in reply.

The former Devon opening batsman emigrated to Australia in 2013 and is playing for Sandford while back in this country on an extended holiday.

In nine games he has scored 366 runs at an average of more than 40 as well as taking 15 wickets in the early 20s.

Skipper Ryan Glass can only speculate how Sandford may have fared had Foan been available all season? Two more wins would probably have been enough to make it a promotion campaign.

Foan and Matt Hopkins (43) put on 79 after Russ Discombe went cheaply. Both went in the space of five runs as 101 for one became 105 for three.

Veteran Adrian Small (31) and skipper Glass (77) stroked a stand of 190 to move Sandford along to 195 for four.

Johannes Wessels accounted for Small, but the runs kept coming with Glass dominating a stand of 36 with Gary Abdoll, who made one, then Jamie Palmer swishing 20 at the end.

Wessels and Dan Fogerty had two wickets each for Lewdown.

Wessels went through 1,100 league runs for the season making 46 in a running total of 98 for four. Harry Geering (27) chipped in.

Foan’s left-arm spin ran through the middle order as Lewdown slumped to 109 for seven. Six wickets went for 18 runs – Wessels among them.

Tom Pengelly hit 55 going in a number nine to stop a total collapse. The last three pairs put on 107 – a decent effort.

Sandford conclude the season with a trip to relegated Ipplepen.
