SOUTH Devon are looking for a new captain following the sudden departure of Jon Martin.

Martin joined South Devon three years ago having previously been with Chudleigh for most of his career.

Jon MartinHe became captain in 2015 after South Devon were promoted back into the B Division – and succeeded in keeping them up by the skin of their teeth.

Martin was the leading English-qualified wicket-taker in the B Division last season with 29 victims – and no one else bowled a cheaper over.

He was re-elected as South Devon skipper last month at the club’s annual meeting, but afterwards felt unable to carry on.

In a letter to club chairman Barry Widdicombe he tendered his resignation and said he would be seeking a transfer.

Martin will be playing for Barton next season, a club he has previously had a spell with more than 10 years ago.

Alphington were also known to be interested in Martin, but they are at the same level as South Devon and he was looking for something higher.

South Devon plan to hold an emergency players’ meeting to decide what to do in the wake of Martin’s departure.
