Rob Woodman - top scored for Devon

DEVON’S practice match against Hampshire 2nd XI ended in a predictable draw after a change of plan overnight.

Devon racked up 310 for five on day one, Tom Lammonby and Finlay Trenouth both getting into the 70s, then had Hants going nowhere at 130 for five.

Instead of playing as originally planned on a new game was agreed for day two, and Hants cracked along to 308 for five declared

After opener Brad Duggan (47) took Hants to 104 for two, Brad Taylor played at anchorman with a patient 64 and Chris Wood top scored with 116 off 93 balls.

Wood was involved in stands worth 192 before Devon paceman Dan Goodey finally prised him out.

It seemed most of Devon’s bowlers bowled a bit to short or marginally off line, Josh Bess and spinner Jamie Stephens the notable exceptions.

Devon had scored at much the same rate on the first day and didn’t exactly hang about either when the batted after tea, finishing on 176-2 in 32 overs.

Rob Woodman made 68 at better than a run-a-ball and Alex Barrow (33) wasn’t much slower before a troublesome contact lens ended his game early.

Keith Donohue, Devon’s director of cricket, felt the matches served their purpose for both sides.

“It was good for us to spend 64 overs in the field on the second day, getting used to the disciplines again after a long winter,” said Donohue.

“Our bowlers got overs in on grass and the size of the Hampshire total didn’t worry me.

“The pitch was pretty flat and offered very little for the bowlers on either side.

“Our bowlers bowled and the batters batted and got runs. It was a worthwhile start to our outdoor preparations.”

Hampshire 308-5 (C P Wood 116, B J Taylor 64, B J Duggan 47; J J Bess 2-16), Devon 176-2 (R J Woodman 68, J J Bess 40no). Match drawn.
