BRIXHAM lost on run rate at home to Budleigh Salterton where they were a long way adrift when time was called on a game that started late and finished early.

Budleigh totted up 303 for four in 40 overs – opener Matt Junk and Max Waller the main run getters.

Junk (90) and Eliot Rice (61) made a rapid start for Budleigh, hammering 145 inside 22 overs for the first wicket.

Although Tim Robinson (2-49) bowled Junk, and added Rice on 178, the runs kept coming from Somerset staffer Waller.

Waller hammered the Brixham bowling for 89 off 59 balls, the bulk of the runs coming in boundaries.

Nine sixes  disappeared over the ropes, as did three fours.

Waller was the last man out on 280 having added 33 with Rice, 46 with Ben Phillips (14) and 56 with Trevor Anning (19no).

Robinson (6.13) was the only bowler to go for less than seven an over.

Brixham were never up with the run rate from the start and at halfway were 68 for three in reply.

Anning, Waller (3-17) and Joel Murphy (1-15) gave Brixham little to hit as the score pottered along.

Jason Oaks made a top score of 45 on his Brixham debut. South African Oaks is the replacement for fellow countryman Marco Marais, whose permission to travel was rescinded by the South African Cricket Board.

Director of cricket Andy Pugh was 28 not out when bad light stopped play.

Brixham continue their A Division programme this Saturday when they visit Lewdown.

Team admin man Murphy said: “It was an unsatisfactory game in many ways due the late start and early finish, but we were happy to take the points from it.

“Brixham put us in and had to bowl with a wet ball, which can be dispiriting – as anyone who has played the game knows.

“They bowled a lot of boundary balls and out batsmen took advantage, picking off the bad balls.

"Chasing 300 and a bit in 40 overs was always going to be a huge ask for any side. Trevor bowled beautifully, Max did too and they were never in the running from a long way out.”
