SKIPPER Richard Foan hit a century as Sandford eased home against Cornwood with one ball to spare.

Steve Lambert and Marc Roca both made half-centuries in Cornwood’s total of 255 for four.

Foan opened up for Bradninch and  by the time he was out the total had reached 211 for four.

There was still work to do though with the game going down to the penultimate ball of the final over, bowled by Andy Bees.

Foan may be the headline act, but he said he didn’t do it alone.

“Tom Williams and Marc Bettis deserve a mention for getting us over the line under pressure.

“Cornwood are a good side and it should give us a bit of confidence going into another tough game next week.”

Coming next for Sandford are Budleigh Salterton, who topped 300 in a rain affected game with Brixham.

Although Cornwood opener Matt Butterworth went cheaply to Jamie Palmer (2-39), there was no stopping Roca (59) and Matt Skeemer (48) in a stand of 63 for the second wicket.

Foan bowled Skeemer on 103, but the runs kept coming from Roca and Lambert.

By the time Williams removed opener Roca, he and Lambert had added another 61 to the running total of 164 for three.

Craig Harris (29no) was Lambert’s running mate in another fine stand of 71 for the fourth wicket.

Lambert was the last man out having hit seven fours and two sixes in his 74 off 72 balls.

Pete Steer, Matt Theedom and Palmer were the only home bowlers under four an over, although Foan (1-42) wasn’t far behind.

Foan, back full-time with Sandford this season having come home from Australia for good, then stroked 118 to lead the chase.

Former Devon batsman Neil Bettis was an early casualty, but Foan and Shaun Hawkins (48) made a sizable dent in the target.

By the time Foan fell on 211 for four he had put on 106 with Hawkins, 33 with Ramesh Lakmal (11) and 45 with Theedom (26).

Bettis (12no) and Williams saw Sandford home with one ball to spare in an unbroken stand of 32.

Duncan Boase, the director of cricket at Cornwood, said it was a game of fine margins that mostly went Sandford’s way.

“There were a lot of things we did well, such as great knocks by Lambert, Roca and Skeemer.

“On what was a flat deck we were probably 30-40 runs light even at 250.

“We didn't start well with the ball and gave them a start when they were on 40 off only a few overs.

“It may have been a different game had we managed to get a couple early ones, but credit goes to Sanford and mainly Richarad Fone.

“He got Sandford off to a good start and he didn't give us a chance throughout.

“Despite the loss a good start with some positives and batters in some form.”
