TAVISTOCK got off the mark in the B Division with a significant four-wicket win at Bideford.

Tavistock intend being among the promotion candidates this season – and Bideford have the same view of themselves after finishing third last season.

Beating a likely rival on their own ground day one will send out a signal to the rest of the division that Tavvy mean business.

Bideford recovered from 19 for three to make 172 all out, thanks largely to Jason Bartolo with a patient 67.

Bideford’s new overseas player went in at 14 for two and was ninth out at 145.

Ollie Hannam (16) and Mike Lemmings (11) provided support. Last man Martin Stewart made 22 to keep Tavvy out longer than intended.

The wickets were shared round with two each for James McGahey, South African signing Dylan Aucamp and Charlie Barriball.

Tavvt won with more than three overs to spare with Billy Barriball the anchorman on his debut.

The former Whitchurch skipper went in at 79 for two after Dave Ball (34) and Ian Gray (31) got started and batted through to the end.

Rob Bone was 18 not out at the end with his former Whitchurch team-mate having put on 67 unbroken.

Skipper Paul Heard (3-24) was easily to pick of the Bideford bowlers, although Lemmings kept it tight for seven overs.

With skipper Shaun Daymond at a wedding, Ball was in charge of the team at Westward Ho!

Said Ball: "It was pleasing to get a win against a good, young Bideford side.

“Bideford did well to get as many as they did from 90 for six after Charlie Barriball and James McGahay bowled controlled spells up top,

"After a solid start from us, Billy Barriball showed his class with 62 no to see us home.

“Rob Bone had a impressive game on debut with bat and ball."

Bideford skipper Heard didn’t pull any punches in is post-match assessment.

“It was a poor start from us,” said heard.

“After winning the toss on a good pitch, only Jayson Bartolo applied himself with 67, and the lower order chipped in usefully but 167 was always short.

“The early bowlers got us back in the game but sloppy dropped catches cost us.

“We were off the pace but we will look to play harder at Seaton this Saturday.”
