Sean Letheren - wickets for Hatherleigh in the win over Cornwood

CORNWOOD need to knuckle down fast if they want to achieve anything this season after sliding to a second successive defeat.

That’s the message from director of cricket Duncan Boase after the run-rate defeat by Hatherleigh.

Boase had hoped Cornwood would learn lessons from their opening day setback against Sandford, but it seems they didn’t.

Cornwood were all out for 113 in the 40th over – Matt Skeemer scoring a half-century – a disappointing total after they had been 61 for one.

Hatherleigh won by eight wickets with 95 for two on the board after a rain break brought their target down.

Boase said if Cornwood want to get back into the Premier Division they have to play better all-round.

“At 60 for one we were well set but didn't apply themselves and played poor shots,” said Boase.

“We need to realise that we aren't automatically going up.

“Our bowling was just as bad. We couldn't bowl a right length or line, making it impossible for the skipper to set a field.

“All round a very bad day in office. It is time to apply ourselves.”

Mark Roca (25), Matt Butterworth (15) and Skeemer made the early runs as Cornwood got to 61 for one.

Wickets tumbled to Jabez Weale (3-21) and Sean Letheran (2-37), then at 104 Skeemer was sixth out.

Matt Thomas (4-4) and Mark Lake went through the lower order as Cornwood crumbled. Five wickets for nine runs tells its own sad story.

Hatherleigh were always in the driving seat after Thomas (44) and Dan Forrester (24) gave them a 76-run start.

By the time Forrester fell skipper Elliott Staddon the target was in single figures.

Mark Lake, the winning Hatherleigh captain, said: “There is a long, long way to go but I couldn't have asked for a better start.

“The lads were superb with the ball and we held all our chances.

“We were very good and Cornwood had an off day.

“If we continue to play like that we will have a good shout in every game.

“Matty Thomas had a brilliant all round game but it was a great team performance.”
