CORNWOOD delivered the win they needed to kick-start their season when they routed Plymstock by eight wickets.

Matt Tamsett marked his promotion to the first team with four wickets for 15 runs from 4.4 overs of left-arm spin as Plymstock were skittled out for 80.

Plymstock were roughed up early by Matt Skeemer (3-20) and Adam Goodliffe (1-10) as they wobbled to 19 for four.

James Nicholls, who went in fourth wicket down, batted the rest of the innings for an unbeaten 18. He hit three fours from 58 balls faced, most of which went down as dots in the scorebook.

Josh Hocken hung around with Nicholls for a while to add 22 for the fifth wicket.

Tail-ender Sayed Ali (15) was the only other batter to contribute a meaningful innings.

Plymstock achieved an early breakthrough when Seb Jordan bowled Mark Roca for nine.

Bu the time Ian Whalley spun out Skeemer the target was two to win and the game long over as a contest.

Skeemer (19) and Matt Butterworth (45no) put on 63 in 11 overs.

Cornwood were winless in two starts before Saturday and in danger of being left behind in the promotion race.

Duncan Bose, the director of cricket, demanded a derby win and got one.

“We put in an excellent bowling performance on a helpful track,” said Boase.

“Matt Tamsett provided a much-needed variation with his left-arm spin after a good, opening spell from Skeemer.

“Matt Butterworth showed good maturity to dig in and win the game with his 45 not out.”

Plymstock captain Scott Mansfield said after two defeats in three outings, actions have to start speaking louder than words.

“If we could play as we talk, we'd be fine, unfortunately we haven't showed in any of the three games played so far what we are capable of,” said Mansfield.

“Losing the toss on a wet track wasn't the reason we lost; poor shot selection or no application from our batsman was more of the reason.

“James Nicholls was the only batsman who applied himself.

“To be all out with 18 overs left to bat is criminal and something we certainly need to work on.

“With 81 on the board it's always tough for the bowlers and Butterworth showed batters how we should have batted.

“With players unavailable for next week’s visit to Lewdown it is a chance for the lads coming in to show what they can do.”
