George Greenway - wickets for Exmouth against Sidmouth

JOSH Bess clattered 93 and brother Zak 72 as Sidmouth piled up the runs in their rain-runined game against Exmouth.

Sidmouth hared along to 269 for seven in the full 50 overs with the Bess brothers leading the way.

Matt Cooke and Luke Bess went cheaply, for eight and seven respectively, but Josh and Zak more than made amends.

Their partnership of 101 for the third wicket formed the bulk of the innings.

County captain Josh has reached 250 league runs for the season already at an average of exactly 50.

Zak has three league half-centuries and a 49 to his name in six trips to the middle. He has stacked up 318 runs at 63.60. Only Paignton’s Richard Ashworth (324) has scored more.

Scott Barlow (30no) and Will Murray (19no) chipped in with 40 unbroken at the end.

Exmouth’s bowling figures were unremarkable, all between four and five an over apart from George Greenway (2-63 off 10).

Exmouth were 68 for one when rain stopped play. Sandy Allen was 37 not out. David Lye (21) was the only casualty.

As Exmouth didn’t play to their best, skipper Richard Baggs was happy with 10 points for a rain-off.

“The game was nicely poised but 270 to win was a big ask on a pitch that offered assistance to the seamers if you put it in the right areas, something we didn't do,” said Baggs.

“We bowled far to many short, four balls and probably let Sidmouth get 50 too many.

“I will take 10 points and move on to Exeter on Saturday.

Exmouth stay second in the table, but have dropped 23 points behind leaders Bovey, who won at Bradninch.

Sidmouth are four points clear of the bottom two.
