THORVERTON turned the formbook on its head when they defeated Tavistock by four wickets.

Tavvy were top two weeks ago, before Bideford knocked them off, and Thorverton in the bottom two.

Thorverton are still in the bottom two but have moved within 12 points of Filleigh, who lost at Abbotskerswell.

Charlie Barriball made a top score of 66 for Tavistock, who took the scenic route to a total of 221 for nine.

Tavvy were an unimpressive 35 for four – Ben Coe taking a couple of wickets up top – before Barriball and James White got together.

A stand of 81 between White and Barriball got Tavvy back in the match. Barriball went lbw to Nick Barton and skipper Shaun Daymond followed almost instantly.

White dropped anchor and with Aucamp (20) and Sean Cleave (49) getting on with it the last three wickets added 76.

Barton and Jake Crouch took two wickets each.

Thorverton got home with three balls to spare with Queenslander James Grady unbeaten on 56.

Opener Paul Fielder (60) was out a 122 for two having put on 59 with acting captain George Greed and 63 with Alex Hills.

Hills (38) and Grady notched 43 for the third wicket, leaving loose ends and not a lot else to sort out.

Greed, deputizing for holidaying skipper Andy Pitt, said: “It was the first complete performance we have delivered this season.

“Ben Coe bowled beautifully with the new ball, picking up crucial early wickets, with Jake Crouch keeping the pressure on at first change.

“Tavistock’s middle order dragged them back into the game, but we kept our cool and restricted them to a par score on a good wicket.

“Paul Fielder, Alex Hills and James Grady all batted superbly, building crucial partnerships to bring us home.”
