Jim Jones - runs for Woodbury in the win over Honiton

WOODBURY & Newton St Cyres sprung the shock of the day in the D Division East by beating Honiton.,

Honiton have been pushing hard behind top two Kentisbeare and Upottery for a while.

Woodbury were winless before the last round of fixtures and must have wondered whether their total of 151 for eight would be enough.

Those fears proved groundless as 10-man Honiton were bowled out for 138.

James Plowman - wickets for WoodburyJim Jones (45) and Shenan Grossberg put on 89 for W&NSCs first wicket before Alan Ostler (2-41) broke the stand.

In a low-scoring game chip-ins from Leighton Dayman (15) and Lloyd Loman (15) didn’t go amiss.

Opener Dave Haysom led the Honiton reply with 62, but only Pete Matravers (25) stayed with him long.

Once Richard Hunt (4-32) got into the middle order it was downhill for Honiton to 112 for eight.

A last-wicket stand of 26 between Kieran Conway (13no) and veteran Phil Tansley (16) had W&NSC worried before James Plowman (2-20) did the business.

Topsham St James went down by five wickets to Chardstock in another low-scoring affair.

Mark Phillips made 62 at run-a-ball rate, but no one else made more than 10 as Tops were bowled out for 124.

Tom Warren (3-22) had the best share of the wickets.

Openers Gary Larcombe (35) and Rob Hutchings (26) got Chardstock going, which left Ed Brown (39) to seal the win.

Dan Armstrong took four of the five wickets to fall.

Chardstock are up to second after beating Topsham St James, but trail leaders Barnstaple & Pilton by nine points.

David Armstrong just missed out on a century in Kentisbeare’s 40-run win over Axminster.

Opener Armstrong made 97 in Kents’ total of 275 for eight. A stand of 166 for the first wicket with Paul Tatterton (61) got the ball rolling.

James Sprague (38) and Martin Howe (21) chipped in lower down.

Alex Wraight had four Kents’ wickets for 55 runs. Dave Field picked up three for 21 at the end.

Sam Farrow clubbed an unbeaten 120 for Axminster, but that wasn’t enough to win it for them.

Neil Farley (2-28) and Martin Howe (2-33) bowled tight spells that helped limit Axminster to 235 for seven in reply.

Halberton & Sampford Peverell took the bragging rights in the derby clash with Tiverton, running out six wicket winners.

Dan Reed top scored for Tiverton with 62 in their total of 180 for seven.

Josh Kalloway (54no) and Lee Hooper (45) set H&SP on course for victory.

BARNSTAPLE & Pilton remain top in the D Division East despite being rained off in the only game not to finish in the division.

Skipper Steve Moore, back in the side for the first time in more than a month after recovering from a nasty back injury sustained at work, had some good fortune thanks to the way the fixtures fell.

B&P were playing second placed Upottery who, as the game was rained off, only picked up a couple a batting bonus point on their rivals.

And Honiton, who were third, lost to previously winless Woodbury & Newton St Cyres, which was not the anticipated result there.

Chardstock are up to second after beating Topsham St James, but trail the leaders by nine points.

Upottery made 43 for one in 20 rain-affected overs. Opener Matt Button-Stephens made 22.

Mark Joyce was the man out, caught first ball by Moore off James Lake.

The game may have been truncated, but will always be notable for a cricketing curiosity.

Barnstaple & Pilton’s side contained four father-and-son combinations. They Steve and Jack Moore, Jamie and Fin Tapp, Patrick and George McEndoo and Mark and Sam Bithell.

With all-rounder Brady Saunders, opening bowlers Paul Schiller and Robin Lake and Jason Smith all available, B&P will be at full strength.
