Moving on - Torquay skipper Justin Yau with the 2016 Servicemaster T20 Cup. Nick Watkin is third from the left

TORQUAY are looking for a new captain and vice-captain following the departure of skipper Justin Yau and his number two Nick Watkin.

Yau, who led Torquay to the Premier title in 2015, has stood down as captain following relegation at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old keeper-batsman has been captain of the only club he has played for nine times in the past 10 years.

Yau, who commuted down from Bristol to play for his home-town club, won two Servicemaster Devon T20 titles as captain and an A Division championship.

Justin Yau - calling time as Torquay skipper after nine seasonsYau said he realised there was a mood within the club it was time for a change of direction and that made his position as captain ‘awkward and untenable’.

“I 100 per cent understand the feeling it is time to go in a new direction and hope the club continue to enjoy success under their new model,” said Yau.

“I am at the age where I still feel I have plenty to offer and harbour ambitions to play competitively and better myself, whether that may be in Devon or Bristol.

“I will take some time to re-assess my options and I look forward to the new challenge ahead wherever that may be.”

Looking back on more than 200 1st XI league and cup games for Torquay, the first when he had just turned 15, Yau said: “It has been a memorable 20 years at Torquay CC and I have experiences that will stay with me forever.Nick Watkin

“Winning the Premier Division in 2015 was a particular highlight and a culmination of years’ of hard work.

“To win back-to-back Devon T20s titles has been brilliant for the club.

“I will remain a huge fan of Torquay CC, having spent the duration of my cricketing years there.

“I would like to publicly thank all those who have played under me during my tenure, particularly Nick Watkin who has been a brilliant number two during my nine years as captain.

“I will always be appreciative of the unconditional support from key committee members at the club who have always backed me since I was a teenager at the club.

“It has been a marvellous journey and I am proud with what we have achieved together.”

All-rounder Watkin, joined Torquay from arch rivals Barton at the end of the 2008 season and has barely missed a game since.

Upwardly mobile Abbotskerswell have signed Watkin for 2018, when they will be back in the A Division following two successive promotions.

Watkin, a bowling all-rounder, was a wicketkeeper too during his Devon age-group career but converted after moving to the Rec.
