GOLFERS chipped in with more than £400 towards the costs of the Devon U21 Women’s tour to South Africa next month.
Thirty-two golfers from all over Devon, representing the 15 girls in the touring party, assembled at Teign Valley Golf Club near Chudleigh for the day.
The rain stayed away and some enjoyable golf was played, with individual and four-ball prizes on offer.
The four-ball competition was very competitive with the additional five points on offer for bringing back your yellow ball proving crucial.
The winners were Dick Holyfield, Stephen Green, Simon Tate and Alan Tyne, who won tickets to the Exeter Chiefs-versus-Saracens Anglo-Welsh Cup tie at Sandy Park on February 3.
Second place went to Matt Theedom, Matt Cooke, Jack Bradbury and Sandy Allen, who took home a voucher for a four-ball to play at Boringdon Park near Plymouth.
Joint third were the teams of Warren Carr, Alex Carr, Jason Degg and Mark Tyler along with Simon Astley-Jones, Jonathan Croft, Joe DuPont and Pete Milner.
The individual award was just as close but Jason Degg managed to hold on to claim the first prize. Longest drive went to Jon Martin with nearest the pin going to Mike Godkin.
The day culminated with a raffle which when added to the green fees meant that £402.50 would go to the tour fund.
Warren Carr, said a ‘fantastic effort’ all-round made the day a success and there were numerous thank-yous to hand out.
“On a very cold and misty morning, huge thanks must go to the club and in particular the head greenkeeper and his staff in getting the course into such a splendid condition for the fund-raising day to go ahead,” said Carr.
“A special thank you to Jon Martin, who organised the day, particularly given that his daughter Emily was not well and in hospital in Colchester.
“Thankfully Emily is on the mend and will be able to take her place on the plane.
The golf day was the penultimate fund-raising event on the calendar for the girls. The last one was a bag pack at Morrisons supermarket.
“Incredibly, the bag pack raised £1,064,” said Carr. “Huge thanks go to Collette Hutchins for organising and co-ordinating the day.”
