AFTER 12 of their allotted 40 overs Tavistock were 25 for four with Jim Redman, the former Somerset player and captain, Geoff Husband, Eric Jarman and Pethick all back in the pavilion.

A middle order recovery led by Jones, Clapp and Ewings pushed the score to 48 for five at halfway and 96 for six after 34 overs.

The final total of 135 looked modest, but gave Tavistock something to bowl at.

Steve Callow, reputed to weigh in at 18 ½ stone, proceeded to send back Paignton openers Graham Ashworth and McLune for one and none.

Doug Treloar at the age of 55, bowled his nine-over stint for 12 runs and one wicket. His frst four overs only yielded two runs.

Ewings and Clapp came on at 42 for four. Ewings took four for 20 and Pethick mopped up the tail with two for two.

While Bascombe, skipper Brian Sambrook and Terry Friend were still living,  especially Friend who is perhaps the biggest hitter in the county, Paignton remained in with a chance.

When man of the match Ewings dismissed Friend for a top score of 22, the writing was on the wall.
Tavistock 135 (Jones 38, D Ewings 27), Paignton 92 (T Friend 22; D Ewings 4-20, D Pethick 2-2, D Treloar 9-3-12-1). Tavistock bt Paignton by 43 runs.
