HAS there ever been a Devon League game like the one between Shaldon and Chagford last Saturday? Probably not.

When Chagford were bowled out for a paltry 34 in 13.1 overs, skipper Del Lammonby must have expected a perfunctory stuffing.

How does a team defend 34 all out? It’s almost impossible.

So how can anyone explain how Shaldon were skittled out in reply for 26 by the end of the 11thover?

The easiest thing to do would be to blame the weather or the state of the ground, neither of which were factors.

Shaldon were depleted in places in a side that showed six changes from the one that walloped Ashburton by 184 runs seven days earlier.

There’s been no comment from Shaldon skipper Todd Ballman, although opposite number Lammonby did have a few views.

“The pitch was good,” said Lammonby, which will be a relief to hear for Shaldon groundsman Charlie Woolnough.

“There was good bowling pressure from both sides – and ditto some poor batting.”

Lammonby, with 14, was the leading scorer on either side in this remarkable game.

Ryan Bougourd took six Chagford wickets for 18 runs and Carl Woolnough three more for 11.

Shaldon had more extras – seven in total – than runs off the bat in their innings.

Lammonby took five wickets for eight runs, Craig Penberthy had two for 17 and Will Lammonby ran out a couple of Shaldon batters.

BOVEY Tracey 2nd XI didn’t hang about on their way to an eight-wicket win over bottom side Plympton.

Ben Steer took out four of Plympton’s top five as the visitors were skittled for 79 in just 18.4 overs.

Opener Charles O’Higgins made 22, Jason Degg had 11 and no one else made more than eight.

Steer (6-34) dominated the bowling return. Will Christophers took two wickets in five balls at the end.

Former Ivybridge youngster Abraham Kopparambil had six overs and a wicket on his Bovey debut.

Kopparambil, who flirted with a sideways move to Clyst St George before committing to Bovey Tracey, was 32 not out in the 11.5 overs it took Bovey to knock off the runs. Freddie Eyston was unbeaten on 34.

BRIDESTOWE moved to the top of C Division West with a convincing win over Ashburton.

Bridestowe openers James Ewen (53) and Gary Sizmur (46) raced to 40 inside four overs and on to 100 in the 18th over.

The introduction of Kris Conabeer (3-14) slowed the run rate and he eventually removed both openers.

Wickets then tumbled as Bridestowe collapsed from 113-0 to 173 all out, only Phil Hatton (11) and Chris Lavis (24) making double figures.

George Marshall (3-39) picked up three wickets and Matt Churchill (2-45) and Lloyd White (2-23) bagged braces.

The Ashburton chase started disastrously as they lost White in the first over to Lavis (3-23).

Either side of a short rain break, Ashburton slumped to 37-7, Lavis and Sizmur (3-4) doing most of the damage.

Marshall (10 no) and James Rush (21) got the visitors up to 77 before they were bowled out.

DARTINGTON & Totnes were on the receiving end of Cornwood’s first league win of the seaon.

Darts meandered from 46 for none to 84 for six then  lost their last four wickets for eight runs reaching 108  all out. Take out Matt Sevior’s 27, Harry Baxendale’s 20 and Chris Cook’s 17 and there was not much from the rest.

Sam Griffiths (4-13) tied up the loose ends after Andy Bees (3-27) and Lee Baker (2-21) did the principle damage.

A rain break reduced the Cornwood target to 92 from 38 overs. The Corns were home and dry with more than 20 overs to go despite Baxendale’s (4-40) efforts to slow them down.

Nathaniel Bell (22) started the chase. James Richardson (45) effectively finished what became a six-wicket win.

KINGSBRIDGE surrendered their unbeaten record and the C Division West leadership when they suffered a seven-wicket drubbing by Lewdown.

Kingsbridge had a woeful day with the bat as they slumped to 57 all out in 25.1 overs.

No one made more than eight as Adam Creasey (5-19), Jack Brady (2-6) and Nick Smith (3-20) gunned down Kingsbridge.

The innings was over so quickly the tea ladies hadn’t finished their work, so out went Lewdown to bash-off the target.

It took just 12 overs for Ollie Brown (12) and man of the match Creasey (23) to end the contest.

Lewdown are the new leaders with Shaldon second and Bridestowe third. Kingsbridge are fifth, but only five points off the pace in a group of five clubs all on three wins.
