Day One report & card | Day Two card

TOM Lammonby batted his way into the record books with a second century in the match as Devon condemned Wales to another weary day in the field.

Lammonby, dual registered with Somerset and a the newly appointed captain of England U19s, has been Devon through and through since making his debut in the under-10 side.

The Exeter-born and bred left-hander scored a maiden Minor Counties ton in the first innings at Sandford in Devon’s hefty total of 476 for nine.

Devon went out to bat a second time around after dismissing Wales for 182 in their first inning and opting against enforcing the follow-on.

After Tom Ansell (50) and Josh Mailling (40) softened up the ball and the Wales bowlers, Lammonby went in at 90 for two and started totting up the runs again.

Lammonby got to 50 off 58 balls as Devon kept adding to their 294-run lead.

Devon wanted a good hour with the new ball at the end of the day so Lammonby didn’t have time on his side.

Lammonby got a message from the sideline he had one over to get six for his second hundred and got them with a ball to spare, prompting the declaration.

Only three batsmen in 117 years of Devon in the Minor Counties Championship have scored two hundreds in the same game: Bob Dawson (2004), Neil Hancock (2006) and Matt Thompson (2013).

Lammonby had no idea he was about to join such an exclusive club while he was batting. He was just focusing on scoring as many runs as possible.

“I hadn’t even thought about scoring a second hundred, just scoring as many runs as I could in the time frame given by the skipper,” said Lammonby.

“It was only when I hit a four that took me to 86 that I thought it might be on, but it wasn’t about me but the team.

“I had no idea about any records and to be honest the significance hasn’t really sunk in.

“Playing for Devon means a lot to me and in years to come I know this is a day I will never forget.”

Wales, 34 for six overnight in reply, recovered to make 182 all out thanks to a county record seventh wicket stand of 145 between Chris Matthews (68) and Sam Pearce (79no).

James Burke (3-32) broke the partnership and knocked over the tail with the minimum of fuss.

There was no collapse second time round for Wales, who were 114 for none at last night’s close. Joe Voke was 54 not out.

Wales go into the third and final day 449 runs behind with a minimum of 102 overs to either survive or make 450 to win.

Devon 476-9 (T A Lammonby 102, Z G G Bess 116, J E Burke 58, E T Yeo 32; R Walker 3-84, R D Edwards 3-94) & 269-4 (T P Ansell 5,0, J H J Mailling 40, T A Lammonby 100no), Wales 182 (C D Matthews 68, S Pearce 79no; J E Burke (3-32) & 114-0 (J H Voke 54no, U Malik 46no). Devon (8pts), Wales (5).
