PLYMPTON’s eight-run win at lowly Brixham should not have been that close.

That’s how skipper Craig Donohue saw it after his side ended a losing run that had dropped them down the A Division table.

“After four defeats in a row we needed a win, but it should never have been that close,” said the Plympton skipper.

“Our 290 was a good enough total and when we had them nine wickets down we ought to have won by a hundred or so.

“We hadn’t got the pro (Abdul Muzammil) out and with 80-odd needed to win and a short boundary on one side, he decided to tee off.

“The last man just stayed there – we really should have got him out but didn’t bowl well enough – and we get down to the last couple of balls and they are two hits from winning.

“I bowled the last over, Muzammil has gone for the big hit fifth ball and got caught on the boundary on the longer side.

“We should have won more comfortably, but after the run we have had I will take any win at all.”

Plympton, five for two with both openers gone, were glad of a stand of 163 for the third wicket between Christian Bunney (68) and Justin Wubbeling (82) for getting the board ticking over.

Jack Horton (22), Ben Privett (40) and Jacob Caunter (25) chipped in.

Tom Blundell and Connor Ashworth took three wickets each for Brixham.

Caunter (3-18) and Donohue (2-66) got into the Brixham early order before Muzammil and Mark Orchard (30) got them motoring.

“Getting Orchard out was important as while they were together Brixham looked dangerous,” said Donohue. The pro ran him out, which helped us.”

Matt Draper (4-55) worked through the middle and lower order until just Muzammil and Tom Stephenson remained.

Muzammil went all the way to 137 before that dramatic last over.
