Flashback to 2013 and Sidmouth versus Cornwood on the Fortfield. The batsman having a slog is Matt Cooke

CORNWOOD are looking for a head coach to take the club forward in 2019.

Cornwood just missed out on promotion from the A Division last season and regaining Premier status remains a target for the village club. But that is not the club’s only goal.

Nick Goodliffe, the club's vice-chairman, said the salaried post at Oak Park is about improving all the teams, not just the 1st XI.

“We value the importance of an experienced, passionate and dedicated cricket coach to lead our coaching initiatives and raise motivation levels across the whole playing structure at the club,” said Goodliffe.

“We are the only village club in the county to have four men’s teams competing in the Tolchards Devon Cricket League.

“Additionally we have a very keen ladies team and a growing colts membership.  We pride ourselves on providing cricket opportunities for all levels.

“A dedicated coach who can prepare and deliver an effective coaching programme, assisted by some our own club volunteers, is essential to the club’s development aspirations.

“Although our own club coaches are keen, their available time is limited, as they all have day jobs.” Click to view the full job description.

Goodliffe said the club had not ruled out bringing an overseas player-coach, but wanted to explore other options too.

“We would like to explore if there may be a keen, local coach who would be interested in taking on the role, which we expect will demand in the region of 25 hours per week, mostly during evenings and weekends,” said Goodliffe.

“If the coach is also a player then we would certainly look to accommodate them in one of our club teams.”

Pre-season nets start on Tuesday, February 26 at Devonport High School for Boys, sports hall in Plymouth. With four Saturday sides, new players are welcome. Contact club captain Matt Skeemer for more details of times.

The expanding ladies section starts pre-season training at Ivybridge Community College sports hall on Monday, January 14.

Sessions will run from 7.30pm-8.30pm and will cater for newcomers as well as those with experience.

“We are very keen to attract some new lady players and if you are inquisitive then why not come along and give it a try and see if you like it,” said Goodchild.

“We have attracted hockey and squash players in recent years, who have adapted well to the necessary techniques needed to succeed in the game.”

Cornwood are hoping to enter two under-10 and two under-12 teams into the Palladium West Devon Youth League next summer, reflecting the success of their youth section.

Parents with children who might be interested in giving cricket a try can take them along to an all-ability session any Monday night from January 14 (6.30-7.30pm) at Ivybridge Community College.
