BABBACOMBE may have to reassess theit goals for the season after losing all-rounder Andy Kingdon for up tp two months.

Kingdon, the former Premier Divison player with Paignton and Bovey Tracey who joined Babbacombe as player-coach four years ago, dislocated a shoulder on Wednesday night playing against Abbotskerswell in the Corninthian Cup.

Kingdon is good for runs and wickets on a regular basis, which skipper Steve Broad was banking on this season for a promotion push.

The Walls Hill outfit finished third in the C Division West last season, just missing out on a place in the play-offs.

Broad has strengthened his squad during the winter and knows what he wants from them.

“Finishing third last season was a big disappointment to us,” said Broad.

“The club aim is to get back into the B Division so we want to win promotion this year.

“We were competitive last season, with players coming in I think we have a bit more quality in depth.”

New to Walls Hill this summer is former South Devon and Barton all-rounder Damon Calland.

Cricket followers with long memories will recall Calland’s late father Arnie made exactly the same switch 30 years ago.

Chris Penner, a batsman, has also left Barton after three seasons of playing irregularly. Broad hopes to get him out most Saturday afternoons.

Amjab Khan, a spin bowler, has moved to the area and joined his local club. With Calland, Paul Bates and Sam Powell in the squad, Broad won’t be short of tweakers.

Other signings from local clubs are Matt Scoles and Sean Molyneux, both from Chelston.

The new overseas player at Babbacombe is Dylan Rayner, an opening bowler who bats as well.

Ironically, Babbacombe are away to Abbotskerswell in their seasonal opener.
