Feniton's Jack Tucker, who made a half-century in the win over Chardstock

SKIPPER Shaun Hawkins struck a match-turning 70 and Jason Matten made 61 as Sandford chased to win against new boys Kentisbeare.

Man of the match Hawkins scythed through the middle and lower order on his way to bowling figures of five for 45.

Sandford were a little wobbly at 89 for four in reply with Chris Blake in and out for 34 and Hawkins unbeaten on 38.

Hawkins partnership of 68 with Matten turned the game. Matten was seventh out on 196, which left he tail-enders to see it through.

Kents’ skipper Tom Martin took three wickets in his second spell – Matten was the first – but despite finishing with five for 32 was unable to stop Sandford getting over the line with 11 balls to spare.

ROB Venn’s battling knock of 92 was not enough to five Sampford Peverell and Tiverton victory in the derby clash with Clyst Hydon.

Hosts Hydon hoisted 249 for eight in 45 overs thanks to a solid set of scores all the way down. Pick of the batters were Ian Sutton (44), Clinton Lewis (35), James Billington (26no) and Heflin Wood (24). Robbie Broomhead (3-39) took the bowling honours for SP&T.

Venn opened up and with support from Kevin Fever (31) got the visitors to 177 for five.

Billington got them both then ran through the lower order en-route to a six-for-29 haul that dismissed SP&T for 206.

CHRIS Ferro and Sam Read both clattered centuries in Clyst St George’s 119-run win over Budleigh Salterton 2nd XI.

Ferro cracked 123 and Read 110 in a first-wicket stand of 212 that underscored Clyst’s total of 302 for seven. Andrew Donovan made 34 to top-up the tally.

Bits and pieces got Feniton to 127 for four in reply, then Tucker and Andy Rose (46) got to work. Their stand of 72 chipped away at the deficit, then Pyle (39no) saw it through with two overs to spare.

HONITON’S new skipper James Pickard is looking for some marginal gains when Clyst Hydon are the visitors this Saturday afternoon.

Pickard’s first game in charge of newly promoted Honiton ended in a narrow 14-run defeat at Upottery.

Jack Larcombe made 94 and there was a round half-century for Adam Pullman (50) in Upottery’s 45-over total of 239 for seven. Pickard had two for 28 and Adam Holmes three for 50.

Three Honiton batter made 50 or more – Andrew Lapping (50), Kev Kelly 52 and Holmes (54) – but keeping up with rate was a problem.

Despite a couple of big overs late on – Andrew Pullman took some punishment – Honiton finished short on 225 for five.

Pickard said wherever he looked there was room for improvement one way or another.

“We had Upottery 72 for four at drinks, but our bowling was poor in the second half and our fielding wasn't good enough,” said Pickard.

“We gave away 28 wides - which is shocking - and dropped four catches. We only had 10 players so felt that in the field a bit.

“Adam Holmes batted well and got to 50 very quickly. Unfortunately he was caught on what looked like a no-ball. That's cricket.

“To be fair, Upottery batted very well and deserved to win.

“We were not up with the run rate with 15 to go and left ourselves a task that was obviously too big.

“We have to go away and work on some things and come back stronger.

“We have a couple of changes for Clyst Hydon, with people now available, so should have a stronger side. “
