George Greenway - career-best bowling display not enough to earn Exmouth win over Sidmouth

SIDMOUTH made it two wins on the spin in defence of the Premier title they won last year when they beat Exmouth by 58 runs.

Rory Thomas made a top score of 46 as Sidmouth recovered from being 49 for four to make 237 all out.

Exmouth seamer George Greenway (5-35) posted career best bowling figures as Sidmouth struggled.

Robbie Powell (30) and Will Murray (34) continued the recovery started by Thomas, taking Sidmouth to 177 for seven.

Tail-ender Max Hancock (20no) and Charlie Miles (21) chipped and chased valuable runs at that the end.

Exmouth started promisingly – they were 60 for none thanks to James Horler (26) and Alex Hammond (26) – them wobbled to 75 for four. Two run out did not help.

Chris Metters (57) and skipper Andy Buzza (22) got the running total up to 125 before the latter became another run-out victim.

Metters tried to shepherd the tail, but wickets fell regularly. And when he was ninth out on 180 the end was not far away.

Losing captain Buzza said there is a reason why Sidmouth have dominated the Premier Division for more than a decade, as his side were reminded.

“To beat Sidmouth you need to play your best and get a little luck – and wasn't the case,” said Buzza.

“Our young players would have learned much from the encounter and I am happy with the positives this 'new side' is showing.

"We bowled well upfront and took key wickets. Sid Fereday bowled tight, aggressive lines and George got the ball moving off a pretty flat pitch.

“Sidmouth rebuilt their innings well with some all-or-nothing style batting and their lower order put together a decent score. At half way I was happy with our performance.”

Buzza said Exmouth had it all to do after losing their way mid-innings and gave it their best shot.

“The issue came when we lost four wickets within 20 runs,” said Buzza.

“Sidmouth's bowling attack was supported by high levels of fielding.

“Metters and I were starting to rebuild after a tough passage of play and we felt at that time we had a great opportunity.

"After I was run out via Murray's finger tip - hit back from Metts – and George Greenway was dismissed by one of the best catches I've seen the game was gone.”
