TAVISTOCK are still looking for a first league win following promotion after they lost by 100 runs at Hatherleigh.

The Moorlanders have been handed a tough start to the season as their first to games have been against sides who have gone straight to the top of the table.

The last-over defeat by Budleigh Salterton on day one was closer than this game, although Tavistock showed most of the same traits in both matches.

“Hatherleigh were a well-oiled unit who batted their overs well and bowled consistently,” said Tavistock captain Shaun Daymond.

“We bowled well for a majority of the innings, we batted okay in patches but again, batting our overs and keeping the scoreboard ticking in the top order is key.”

Hatherleigh got a move on in the second half of their innings to total 228 all out.

Ryan Davies, who went in at 58 for three, was still here at the end having anchored stands of 77 with Simon Gillespie (33) and 67 unbroken with Charlie Neilson (42no).

Dylan Aucamp (2-31) and Sean Cleave (2-38) shared four of the five wickets to fall.

Tavvy opener James White batted 71 balls for his 31, but was short of reliable partners at the other end. When he was fourth out at 69 batters came and went at regular intervals. Only Charlie Barriball (24) had much of an impact.

Hatherleigh’s spinners prospered with three wickets each for Mark Lake (3-27) and Tinotenda Mutombodzi (3-14).

Lake, the Hatherleigh skipper, said the outcome was ‘never in doubt ‘from his perspective.

“The pitch was tricky to bat on early and 230 was more like 280 as the outfield was a bit slow having not been cut due to it being wet,” said Lake.

“The boys were excellent with the bat and Charlie's cameo at the end bolstered our score.

“Ryan anchored our innings very well.

“We bowled well as a unit kept the pressure on and chipped away. Never looked in doubt at any stage.”
