Will Churchill - five wickets against Bridestowe

MATT Churchill gunned down Bridestowe’s middle order to speed Ashburton to a 60-run win at Millaton.

Ashes took the scenic route to 209 for nine in 45 overs, recovering from 27 for three and 81 for six to get there.

Chris Pascoe dug in for 39 off 51 balls and when he went the fightback continued with Churchill (29) and Will Coon (27) at the forefront.

Eddy Jones (4-49) was not the cheapest of the Bridestowe bowlers, but he took the most wickets.

Gary Sizmur (33) and Jones (19) gave Ashes a 47-run start, but losing three wickets going from 57 for one to 64 for four was a setback.

Churchill (5-22) got into the middle order and with Coon spinning out two for 40 it was downhill all the way to 149. Ian Jutson was 27 not out when the last wicket fell.

Winning captain Ashley Berry said the manner of victory was hugely encouraging.

“Although we weren't at our best, we showed our depth as a team and that’s an asset that can hold us in good stead for the rest of the season,” he said.

KINGSBRIDGE won for the first time this season when they defeated Shaldon by two wickets.

Victory was not enough to get Kingsbridge out of the bottom three, but they have moved with 21 points of safety.

Shaldon were in all sorts of trouble at 84 for six with opener Ruben Minnaar (39) the only batter to linger long.

Carl Woolnough (51) and Mark Jameson (31) put together a seventh-wicket stand of 82 that took Shaldon towards their eventual target of 180 all out.

Wickets fell two by two to Richard Carr, Ollie Robinson, Clive Clark and Eliott Bradbury.

Kingsbridge had it all to do after stumbling to 45 for five, but as long as Bradbury hung around it was not a lost cause.

Bradbury batted on and on for an unbeaten 75 off 96 balls and his stand with Andy Sutton (23) started the fightback.

John Hardy (33) put on 71 with Bradbury for the seventh wicket to make victory a reality.

Carl Woolnough (3-19) and Richie Fisher (3-28) were the leading wicket takers for Shaldon.

SPIN was king for Plymouth 2nd XI in their 17-run win at Babbacombe.

The seamers did not make much impression when Plymouth set about defending a modest total of 169, but the spinners did.

There were three wickets each for Dan Farnham, John Kerridge and Fahad Ali as Babbacombe were bowled out for 152 with four overs to go.

Babbacombe’s innings went in fits and starts from 85 for three to 94 for six, recovered to 149 for seven then caved in as the last three wickets went fur a run each.

Opener Billy Allcock made 43 and next best with 30 was Matt Inch, who was the last man out.

Plymouth’s total was constructed round a steady effort from the middle order.

Adam Talbott (31), Dave Burke (28) and Kerridge (24) all chipped in.

Dean Durrant had two for 30 from nine overs for Babbacombe and Tim Goodwin picked up two for 32, from two entertaining overs.

DAN Piddock had a sound case for man of the match in Cornwood 2nd XI’s four-wicket win over Stoke Gabriel.

Piddock (3-25) and Dan Skeemer (3-39) were Cornwood’s most effective bowlers as Stoke were dismissed for 162. Jamie Bailey (1-17 off 9) deserved more for his efforts.

Tim Withington (24) was the only one of the Stoke top four to settle in, which he did for 71 balls! Seb Ansley (23) and Mike Meech (50no) moved the score on after drinks.

Ciaran Gray (31) and Piddock (67) gave the Corns a 98-run start. Piddock went at 130 for three, which left Nathaniel Bell (28no) to see the chase home.

Kyle Lardner and Jack Tolley had two wickets each in a losing cause for Stoke.

YELVERTON came a cropper by nine wickets away to early leaders Dartington & Totnes.

Yelverton were skittled out for 86 in 20.3 overs. Opener Geoff Brain hit 21, Ryan Dibble made 29 not out and no one else reached double figures. Four batters failed to get off the mark.

D&Ts South African all-rounder Jacobus Snyman had five Yelverton wickets for 16 runs. Chris Cook and Harry Baxendale took two each.

Snyman (29) and Cook (29no) made a 46-run dent in the deficit, which left Baxendale (14no) wiped off. It was all done and dusted before the 17th over ended.

Darts are played five and won them all at the top of the table. Yelverton have yet to win.
