BRAUNTON trounced Barnstaple & Pilton by 211 in a one-sided derby date at Kelsey.
Opener Ben Whitty slammed 108 to put Braunton on course for a total of 267 for five. There were stands of 5 with Callum Mitchell (26), 104 with Jack Whittaker (39) and 43 with Dan Brierley.
Skipper Brierley was the last man out for 47.
Barnstaple & Pilton were all out in reply for just 56. Opener George McEndoo and Robin Norton at first wicket down both made 10.
Opening bowlers Joe Barnes and Mark Johnson had three wickets each and Brierley had a couple. Steve Moore, the former B&P captain who rejoined Braunton last month, also had a wicket.
Brierley made some tweaks to job roles in the side specifically for the game and was delighted when they came off.
“Promoting Ben to open batting and pushing myself up the order made a difference to the batting,” said Brierley.
“Our bowling was a bit different with Joe Barnes getting the new ball. He bowled absolute rockets and bounced three players out.
“Mark Johnson bowled economically and we fielded very well.
“Overall, full control and a great performance. A 10 out of 10 performance.
“Now is a time to get a away win next.”
Braunton are third from top in the latest table C Division East table. Barnstaple & Pilton have dropped to one off the bottom.
WHIMPLE shook off Sidmouth 2nd XI to go solo at the top of the C East rankings when they beat Shobrooke Park by six wickets.
Jareer Shikrani (37) made the only score above 20 in Shobrooke’s all-out total of 123.
Wickets were shared with three for Matt Brown and two for Gareth Stoneman and Lee Nessling.
Whimple had the runs knocked off in 23 overs. Henry Gordon-Lennox (29) got the ball rolling, leaving Cameron Kidd (26no) and skipper Ben Silk (30no) to wrap it up.
Sidmouth were level going into round five, but dropped two points beating Exmouth and are tucked into second place.
Skipper Silk is looking for more of the same in the weeks ahead.
“Keep winning and we win the division,” said Silk.
“We bowled really well to restrict them to 123.
“The openers (Hathaway and Stoneman) were fantastic and both should have had more wickets.
“Lee bowled really well and hardly went for any. Then the batsman did their job.”
SIDMOUTH heaped more pressure on Exeter 2nd XI at the foot of the table by racing to an eight-wicket win on the County Ground.
Mike Wilkinson hit 84 and Sean Langford hit 42 to underpin Exeter’s total of 216 for six. Opener Wilkinson was fifth out at 197 to Jashan Patidar (3-33).
Elliott Rice reeled off a century opening the batting as Sidmouth went off in hot pursuit.
Rice, who hit 17 fours and a six, finished unbeaten on 102. He shared stands of 122 with Nick Mansfield (44) and 78 with Nick Gingell (51).
Missed bowling points cost Sidmouth a share of top spot. Exeter are stuck in the bottom three for another week at least.
ALEX Clements hit his first league ton for three seasons as Ottery St Mary piled up the runs en route to a 147-run victory over Alphington.
Clements top scored with 108 in Ottery’s total of 297 for six. His last ton was against Pymstock back in 2016.
A first-wicket stand of 196 between Clements and Oliver West (66) left the Alphington bowling demoralised until Lee Craven (3-55) and Mark Halse made some breakthroughs with two wickets each.
Rob Johns with a rapid 42 and Sam Brook (15) heaved away for 56 unbroken in the latter overs.
Alphington, currently in the bottom three, were bowled out for 150 with more than seven overs to go.
The writing was on the wall when they were 74 for six, but James Watson (29) hung around and with back up from tail-ender Jack Mills (27) made the scoreline a little more respectable.
Joe Birch and Jack Malden had three wickets each for Ottery.
SIMON Sobczak hit a half-century and Todd Barrett was two runs short of another in Heathcoat 2nd XI’s five-wicket win over visiting Exmouth 2nd XI.
Sean Day played a captain’s innings of 55 to point Exmouth towards a total of 183 for eight. James Edworthy (34) and Tobias Pugsley (23) chipped in.
Lee Dixon was the best of Heathcoat’s bowlers with three wickets for 15 runs.
Opener Barrett, left out of the 1st XI, made 48 of the first 61 on the board. Sonczak (52) with support from Jon Fairclough (26) and Tom Frankpitt (20) joined up the dots.
