PAIGNTON are out on their own at the top of the D Division West after winning the top-of-the-table clash with Chelston & Kingskerswell by 36 runs.
The Woodcock brothers – Sam (84) and George (24) – were among the runs in Paignton’s total of 232 for eight.
Opener Archie Farkins hit 34 and Rory Medlock had 31 going in at six.
The big stands were 76 between Farkins and Sam Woodcock and 63 between Woodcock and Medlock.
Chelston paceman Shorn Bobb took two for 27 from nine lively overs. Mark Faulkner (1-37) was miserly and Stuart Collyer (3-45) took wickets at the end.
Chelston went off in hot pursuit with Chris Harrison (33) and Lucas Grierson (53) making a 98-run dent in the deficit.
Bobb (24) and Erik Gregersen (25) kept the chase going and Nick Guest chipped in with 21.
Sam Woodcock (3-48) picked up wickets at the right times and after Bobb fell to him the chase subsided from 156 for five to 196 all out.
Paignton (96pts) are 11 points clear of Chelston & Kingskerswell and Hatherleigh, who are joint second on 87 points.
SOUTH Devon captain James Allen was disappointed not to take a full 20-point haul away from the game against Plymouth Civil Service & Roborough.
Although South Devon were comfortable seven-wicket winners, they dropped a point by failing to bowl out Civil.
Civil, who have been propping up the table since week one and are winless in five starts, reached 113 for nine in 36 overs.
Joe Kitto (3-22) and spinner Rob Stephens (3-29) did most of the damage, aided by Ali Wright with two for seven.
Failing to break the last-wicket partnership cost South Devon a bowling point, which really rankled with Allen.
“It was disappointing not to bowl them out and leave a point out there,” said Allen.
“Civil did not want to play too many attacking shots and were happy playing a waiting game on what was not a great pitch.
“It wasn’t that we bowled terribly, or that we did that much wrong, we just could not get that last wicket.”
There was no issue with the run chase though as openers Jonty Tupman (27) and Harry Senior (18) laid the foundations for Allen (25) and John Purchese (27no) to tidy up.
Five games into the season, one that Allen hopes will end in promotion, South Devon are joint fourth in a division with three promotion places.
The promotion places are 17 points distant, not that Allen is too worried.
“We have a number of new faces in the team and are still gelling together,” said Allen.
South Devon are at home to Plympton 2nd XI this Saturday.
BEN Powell struck a maiden league century to guide Whitchurch to a five-wicket win at Ipplepen.
Powell has 11 half-centuries to his name for Whitchurch but had not reached three figures before. His previous best was 70 against Kenn last season.
Powell opened up against Ipplepen and batted through for an unbeaten 115 as Whitchurch chased 210 to win and got them with 4.3 overs to spare. He faced 92 balls and hit 16 fours and six.
There were stands of 57 with Nigel Barriball (17) and 39 unbroken with Dan Poole (14no) to settle it.
Pens’ bowlers were largely adept at keeping the runs down, but less successful at taking wickets.
Ipplepen’s 45-over total of 210 for nine was reinforced by Matt Quartley, who flayed 12 fours and three sixes in a 49-ball knock of 77.
By the time Poole dismissed Quartley he had been involved in partnerships worth 120 for four wicket lost. Callum Thomas (23) and Matt Abbott (27no) bot chipped in.
Marc Kerswill and Rob Bone were miserly with the ball but had few wickets to show for their efforts. Darren Sambells (3-48) was the leading wicket taker.
PLYMPTON 2nd XI were on the receiving end as Lewdown won for the first time this season.
In-form batsman Steve Raven made a top score of 77 in Plympton’s total of 166 all out.
Rob Walker made 34 – he and Raven added 60 for the fourth wicket – but there was a noticeable lack of support from the rest of the batting order.
Nick Smith (3-30) and skipper Dave Ball (3-21) led the Lewdown bowling effort.
Opener Ball then took Lewdown in sight of victory with a patient 63. The winning partnership was one worth 108 between Ball and Tom Pengelly (62no) that left just seven required for victory.
HATHERLEIGH 2nd XI carried too much firepower for Kenn as they sauntered to a 126-run win at Trehill.
Simon Wheale (42) got Hathreleigh up and running and with scores added on fromRomario Braitwaite (33), Greg Solkin (34) and Asange Nefanya (34) a total of 205 all out was posted.
Peter Blows (4-43) was the pick of the bowlers for Kenn, but not as cheap to operate as James Gosling (0-26) or Mark Fuller (2-33).
Kenn stumbled to 55 for three then crashed to 79 all out. No one made more than Ben Chaloner (20).
Niall Leahy (2-22) took early wickets and Charlie Presswell (2-17) had to at the end, but the real damage was done by old warhorse Richard Tidball, who took five for 12 in 28 balls.
Hatherleigh are joint second in the latest table.
