James Mitcham, who rattled off a ton for Upottery in the win over Feniton

SAMPFORD Peverell & Tiverton were on the receiving end as Clyst St George crushed them by eight wickets to move a step closer to promotion.

Lee Hooper’s 39 off 64 balls was the best of the bits-and-pieces scores that comprised SP&T’s all-out total of 178.

Wickets were shared with two each for Sam Read and Matt Knight as well as three run outs.

Clyst had the runs knocked off inside 28 overs for the loss Read and Freddie Creer.

Read hit 122 – 22 fours in there – en-route to his sixth league hundred of the summer so far.  He has 930 runs at an average of exactly 93 for the season.

Chris Ferro was 41 not out when the winning post was passed.

Sampford Peverell & Tiverton are still in with a promotion chance as they are only four points off third-placed Upottery.

Clyst St George are 32 points clear of Sandford at the top.

JAMES Mitcham stroked a century as Upottery chased 249 to win at Feniton with two wickets and three balls to spare.

Feniton, orbiting one place and six points above the relegation places, made 248 for nine in 45 overs.

The top five all got runs with Jack Tucker (64), Alex Frankpitt (33) and Mark Kingdon (30) heading the list.

Opener Mitcham was first out for 109 with the score on 163. Fellow opener Jack Larcombe (69) was the anchorman up to 216 for six, which left Rob Tasker (27no) to wrap it up.

It was hardly a stroll for Upottery as Feniton seamer took a career-best seven for 41 haul to put pressure on in the latter stages.

Upottery are now third having gone past Kentisbeare, who lost to Chardstock.

KENTISBEARE lost out by just one run in a last-ball thriller against visiting Chardstock.

Chardstock started motoring in the second half of their innings as Tom Warren (59no), James Pyman (27) and Alex Watson (76) got them up to 264 for seven.

Watson clubbed eight sixes and four fours during an exhilarating 35-ball stay. Harvey Sanders went for three sixes, a four and a single in one over.

Matt Stewart took three for 14 off nine for Kents before the long handle came out of the bag.

Stewart (68) and Scott Chappell (44) got Kents up to 153 for three then Steve Reed (49) and Alex Brooks (25) chipped away at the total.

The last over from Watson arrived with Kents needing six to win. Rory Tatterton (20no) hit the third ball for four but could not find one more blow to win it as his side closed on 263 for six.

SANDFORD 2ndXI are still sitting tight behind leaders Clyst St George in the D Division East after they defeated Clyst Hydon by 22 runs in a high-scoring affair.

Matt Theedom belted eight fours and four sixes on his way to 93 in Sandford’s total of 280 for eight.

After Chris Blake (36) and Adam Small (25) got Sandford up and running, Theedom put on 68 with Jim Shepherd (18) and 78 with Adam Creasy (50).

Hydon’s James Billington (1-70) took some stick against dad Keith’s former club. Chris Holmes (3-46) was the pick of the bowlers.

Hydon gave it a real go in reply and at 225 for three looked the most likely winners. Ian Sutton (64), Rob Randall (72), Keith Herselman (28) and Dom Carswell (30) had manoeuvred them into a strong position.

It all went wrong when Harvey Blake came back into the attack and removed Carswell almost immediately. Hydon’s 225 for three became 234 for seven then239 for eight in a hurry.

Blake finished with four for 54 and Creasy three for 35 as Hydon subside to 258 all out.

Sandford go to bottom side Budleigh this Saturday. Hydon will be aiming to bounce back against Feniton.

HONITON moved closer to safety in the D Division East thanks to a six-wicket win in the basement battle with bottom side Budleigh 2ndXI.

Harry Parkin made a top score of 25 for Budleigh, who were bowled out for 110. Willy Graham and Adam Holmes took three wickets each.

Opener Dave Haysom (28no) batted through for Honiton and his stand of 68 with Oli Cave (46) ended any speculation about the result.

Honiton are still second from bottom, but defeats for Feniton and Clyst Hydon mean the gap between them and safety is only 13 points.
