Sam Read - topped 1,000 runs for the season and took four wickets in the win over Sandford

SCHOOLBOY run machine Sam Read went through 1,000 league runs for the season in Clyst St George’s 31-runs win over Sandford in the D East top-of-the-table clash.

Read had a quiet afternoon by his standards, but his 21 runs took him to 1,014 for the league season at an average of 84.50.

St George took the scenic route to 218 for eight in 45 overs. Chris Ferro (54) took them to 109 for three and Freddie Creer (22) got the total up to 141 for four.

Wickets tumbled to Ben Clement (4-40) as Clyst dipped to 160 for seven. Bertie Creer (23no) and skipper Harry Attwater (32) took them most of the way to 218.

Tom Gidney (51) and Chris Blake (34) were the main contributors as Sandford to 114 for two.

Then Sandford ran into trouble against Sam Read (4-34) and Freddie Creer (4-41) and never really recovered. Jim Shepherd was not out on 30 in the final total of 187 all out.

BUDLEIGH Salterton are one defeat away from a second successive relegation despite registering a three-wicket win over Chardstock.

It was only Budleigh’s second league win of the season and looks to have come along to late to change anything.

Budleigh are bottom of the D East table and 65 points away from safety with 80 to play for.

Skipper Dan Messom has been resigned to relegation for sometime so the arithmetic of the situation has not bothered him.

Curiously, it is the success of the 1st XI in the A Division that has hurt Messom’s men this season as players like Donovan Robinson and the Doble brothers have successfully gone up a level and not been replaced.

Chardstock captain Rob Hutchings, out for nothing against Sandford seven days earlier, made a top score of 81 and shared a stand of 82 with Ed Pyman (25). Tom Warren made 34.

Sean Butler (4-25) was the man of the moment with the ball for Budleigh.

Budleigh opener Harry Parkin batted through for an unbeaten 108 as the runs were knocked off with nine balls to spare. His stand of 156 with Nick Boult (70) was crucial.

KENTISBEARE eased their relegation worries with a three-wicket win over Honiton that put 21 points between them and the relegation zone.

Openers Dave Haysom (76) and Kevin Kelly (36) were Honiton’s leading run getters in their total of 168 all out. They put on 97.

Wickets were shared between Ed Halse (3-42) and Neil Farley and Alex Brooks, who took a couple each.

Matt Stewart (50) and Paul Tatterton (44) gave Kents an identical 97-run start. Tatterton was still there up to 141 for four. Scott Chappell (21) and Rory Tatterton (19no) were the supporting acts in the win.

In form Willy Graham had three wickets for 24 runs.

SAMPFORD Peverell & Tiverton kept their promotion prospects bubbling away with a five-wicket win over Feniton.

Adrian Pullin (76) and Graham Tucker (30) were Feniton’s prime run getters in their total of 203 all out.

Joe Parkinson (4-7) and Ben Franks (3-36) led the bowling effort for SP&T.

Sampford Peverell & Tiverton got cracking through Lee Hooper (47), but after a 50 run opening lost three wickets going from 88 to 89!.

James Mayes (23), Matt Summerfield (39no) and Will Bucknell (31no) tidied up the loose ends.

Sampford Peverell & Tiverton are five points behind third-placed Upottery and 10 behind Sandford in second place.

With Upottery (Aug 17) and Sandford (Aug 24) to play, SP&T’s destiny is in their own hands.

CLYST Hydon remain in the D East bottom three for another week after going down by 60 runs to visiting Upottery.

Upottery recovered from 19 for two to make 191 all out. Matt Broom (26) began the recovery then Mark Joyce (25), Rob Tasker (29) and Ryan Pulman (23) kept it going.

Chris Holmes took three for 52 and Sinthuran Thevaraj took two wickets in the last over.

Hydon had it all to do after slumping to 54 for five in reply under pressure from Adrian Salter (2-29) and James Mitcham (3-43).

Alex Newman (33) and Holmes (22) fought back but the damage was done.

Paul Wakefield picked off Newman and Holmes on his way to figures of five for 31 as Hydon were bowled out for 131.
