TWO former Devon League cricketers have been named in South Africa A squads for an upcoming tour to India.

Zubayr Hamza, who was Paignton’s overseas player in 2014, has been named in the First Class squad for two four-day games on the tour.

Hamza, now a regular in the Cape Cobras’ side, made his Test debut for South Africa against Pakistan back in January.

He scored 772 runs and took hundreds – both undefeated off Chudleigh (132) and Abbotskerswell (101).Zubyar Hamza - Paignton old boy

Kyle Verreynne, who was with North Devon in 2016 has been added to the South Africa A squad for the tour of India later this year. He had a decent season at Instow, hitting three tons and two 50s on his way to 628 Premier runs at 52.33.

Verreynne has replaced the injured Gihahn Cloete in the limited-overs squad

The 22-year-old Verreynne was the second-highest run-scorer in the 2018-19 One-Day Cup, with 453 in nine innings at an average of 64.71.

The Cape Cobras star also collected 583 runs in 15 innings at an average of 44.84 during the 2018-19 4-Day Franchise Series.

Another Devon League old boy very much on the radar right now is former Plymouth batsman Marnus Labuschagne, currently playing for Australia against England in the Leeds Test.

Labuschange announced his arrival in Devon with an unbeaten 126 against North Devon in the opening game of the 2013 season. He added 130 not out against Bradninch seven days later.

The South African-born batter toped the Premier averages that summer with 730 at 60.83 – not bad for someone who was 18 when he arrived.
